Indian Student & Aunt Kill Neighbor for Video Game

Wednesday, 13th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
This seems like the kind of thing most Americans feared would (or perhaps already had) happen with American children –  when a 14 year old student in India murdered a senior citizen over the weekend in order to get video games, it proved it’s obviously capable of happening anywhere.

In this case, student Mahesh (whose name has been changed) asked his Aunt, Saritha, for RS 8000 to buy a video game. When she told him she didn’t have the money, Continue reading “Indian Student & Aunt Kill Neighbor for Video Game” »

Bronies: Changing the Definition of Masculinity?

Wednesday, 13th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
Ever since the Bronyhood fad emerged a couple years ago, most men couldn’t remotely fathom the appeal of My Little Pony. Those who can faintly remember the original toy might have found their complete immobile nature and lack of kung-fu grip irritating, and were relieved when they disappeared presumably never to be heard from again.

Then in 2010 they exploded with the cartoon re-launch Friendship is Magic, especially with the young girls (but with guys also). This video explains, why it took off in such a big way with guys.  Continue reading “Bronies: Changing the Definition of Masculinity?” »

Will Obama’s Biggest Campaign Adversary Be Racism? Google Might Have the Answer

Wednesday, 13th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
Stack it up: Congress in gridlock. The bailouts. The economy in general. All that stuff going down with the commerce secretary and his car wrecks over the weekend. And yet all that aside, one particular issue still stands to provide the President with a fairly formidable obstacle: the race thing — or ‘card’ if you prefer.

It might make sense, especially as the U.S. and Florida each try to sue each other over the latter’s supposed illegal voting practices. So: is racism still that big a deterrence to Obama getting re-elected?

Perhaps more importantly: could we be on the verge of finding a method to ‘weed out’ the racism factor altogether (with the help of Google and a Harvard researcher)? Continue reading “Will Obama’s Biggest Campaign Adversary Be Racism? Google Might Have the Answer” »

So Now Bill Murray Wants to Be in Ghostbusters 3…?

Tuesday, 12th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
In an appearance on The David Letterman Show, Bill Murray seemed to completely backpedal and say that he’d be willing to do Ghostbusters 3, but, again, the script is gonna ‘have to be good.’

According to BleedingCool:

“It’s hard to make a sequel, it’s got to be really funny and that first one was so darn funny, it’s hard for me. I think we’ll try again. I always drag my feet on it, but I think…” Continue reading “So Now Bill Murray Wants to Be in Ghostbusters 3…?” »

Witness the Promo For What Could Be The Most Awesome Kickstarter Campaign Ever

Tuesday, 12th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
The ultimate goal for Science Fiction author/swordfighting aficionado Neal Stephenson won’t be an easy one to realize. Judging by the sheer awesomeness of his Kickstarter campaign video, the idea comes across as both lofty and genius — not only in theory, but in what looks like carefully detailed planning, elaborate experimentation, and of course the insane promo that contains it all.

Note: You won’t have to be into swordfighting or Neal Stephenson to appreciate this.   Continue reading “Witness the Promo For What Could Be The Most Awesome Kickstarter Campaign Ever” »

RiffTrax/MST3K Guys Heckle Mega Man, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy

Monday, 11th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
When we first heard that Mike Nelson and some of the leftover guys from MST3K were going to be heckling video games, it seemed too good to true. And despite a teaser video being released of them yelling at Gears of War 3, much time has passed and we haven’t heard much in that department.

If you’ve been waiting to see what RiffTrax  (comprised of guys leftover from Mystery Science Theater) would come up for other video games, you might be relieved to hear that they’ve released another video, which comes courtesy of Joystiq and features the boys up to all their usual antics — including questioning Continue reading “RiffTrax/MST3K Guys Heckle Mega Man, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy” »

This Kinda Creepy Robot Will Comfort You As You Die

Monday, 11th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
Artist/engineer Dan Chen has created an interesting little toy known as the “End of Life Care Machine”, designed to comfort you in those moments right when you’re lying and dying in agony in a hospital. The robot is the main attraction of a larger art project/installation known as Last Moment Hospital — all part of Chen’s thesis, called File>Save As>Intimacy.

According to The Verge, would-be patients are visited by a doctor, who informs them of their doomed status before saying “I have more important patients, here’s a robot, f*ck you” and leaving them alone with a machine Continue reading “This Kinda Creepy Robot Will Comfort You As You Die” »

(Another) Elected Official Caught on Tape Viciously Beating Kid

Monday, 11th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
A elected Imperial County council member was caught beating his stepson with a belt during a game of catch over the weekend, when the kid failed to hold onto the ball.

The official’s next door neighbor happened to be watching from his upper floor window when he caught the man beating his son three separate times with a belt, despite the boy’s pleas for him to stop. While videotaping the incident, he even began yelling at the man, who responded (not surprisingly) hostilely.

Why It’s Okay To Fail: Several CEOs and Geeks Offer Advice on How They Found Success

Monday, 11th June 2012

Ever wonder how some of most powerful geeks of all time became famous so (seemingly) fast? Yes, sometimes we’re prone to want to hate on overnight sensations, but as this handy little video reveals, though, it’s never as easy as it looked.

It also shows, there is no such a thing as an overnight sensation.

In fact, it’s usually littered with years upon years of failure, the better part of a decade. Continue reading “Why It’s Okay To Fail: Several CEOs and Geeks Offer Advice on How They Found Success” »

Adam WaRock Gives Ray Bradbury a Nerdcore Memento Mori

Friday, 8th June 2012

It’s been less than 3 days since Ray Bradbury bit the big one, and already nerdcore guru Adam WaRock has taken it upon himself to pay tribute to the guy.

Hey, when any musician takes time to compose an ode to a sci-fi literary giant, it’s more than worth noting –as was the “F*ck Me Ray Bradbury” song from a few years back proved. Continue reading “Adam WaRock Gives Ray Bradbury a Nerdcore Memento Mori” »

Did North Korea Sell Malware-Infected Video Games to South Korea?

Friday, 8th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
It was Wednesday when North Korean premier Kim Jong Un delivered a speech to a stadium full of (mostly weeping) children, telling them that they would soon be denizens of a ‘happy and prosperous nation’ and that they were “more precious than 100 million tons of gold and silver.”

Apparently the next day he realized what a pu$$y he’d been, and immediately promised to unleash ‘a sea of fire’ on South Korea, should they rehearse any military drills.

Living in the most bipolar nation in the world, then, it’s perhaps not too implausible that North Korea met with South Korea to sell them some online video games, which turned out to be infected with tons of malware. Dominic Omega’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Rap Isn’t for N00bz

Sometimes nerdcore is like this stream that runs dry and then all of a sudden it sort of of just spurts out of nowhere and is all over the place (that’s a blood metaphor).

Thank god there’s guys like this to give us yet more of it, based yet again on another rather blood-gushing epic tale — and this time it’s courtesy of Mr.Dominic Omega, a dude I’ve never heard of but who’s so skillfully woven his rhymes with the the epic score of GOT (all dutifully mixed by The Arcitype). This Girl Really Wants to Win That Justin Bieber Contest

Friday, 8th June 2012

First, the set-up: For Justin Bieber’s new contest, all you have to do is submit a song of yourself covering his new single, ‘Boyfriend’, via Youtube/Vimeo/whatever, and whomever has the most unique vision will appear on NBC’s Justin Bieber special, and get, I dunno, a sh*tload of hits and a meat tray or something.

As Geekosystem has pointed out, there’s a lot of eager teens submitting their videos, and doing the very best they can. Continue reading “This Girl Really Wants to Win That Justin Bieber Contest” »

So Long to Ray Bradbury, One of the Most Influential Geeks of Our Time

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
For those of you who’d done your best to forget the trials and tribulations of high school required reading (and who hasn’t), it’s still worth noting that legendary sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury passed away yesterday peacefully at the ripe old age of 91.

Regardless of how much you hated/loved/skimmed through Fahrenheit 451 or The Martian Chronicles, these works had a huge impact on pop culture, influencing authors like Stephen King, Robert Heinlein, Carl Sagan, Harlan Ellison, and others — Continue reading “So Long to Ray Bradbury, One of the Most Influential Geeks of Our Time” »

So George Lucas is Really Seriously Retiring (What Exactly Happened to Star Wars: Underworld?)

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

Follow @jeffnau
As we reported some months ago, George Lucas promised he’d be retiring from the film industry this year, after a good 4 decades or so in the Hollywood.

The real reasons remained unclear: the director insisted he wanted to sort of return to the indie side of things (like American Graffiti, I guess?). Not much has been heard since, and some thought there still might be a chance: he was after all, still supposedly working on Star Wars: Underworld,  a new TV series/pilot/movie of some sort.

Not the case, as Continue reading “So George Lucas is Really Seriously Retiring (What Exactly Happened to Star Wars: Underworld?)” »

E3: Nintendo Shows Off New Sh*t; Mario Creator Goes Insane

Tuesday, 5th June 2012

With E3 news flooding the Internet, much of the talk has centered around Nintendo and whether or not it can emerge from the impending abyss it seems hurled toward.

Basically meaning, how’d that Wii U thing turn out?

While performance specs aren’t exactly concrete, there’s been a lot of buzz, courtesy of Kotaku: the white Wii U controller, the fact that, yes, there will be a Super Mario Bros U Wii (available on both remote and gamepad).

Speaking of which, here’s the trailer. And stay tuned for Shigeru Miyamoto getting REALLY EXCITED about Continue reading “E3: Nintendo Shows Off New Sh*t; Mario Creator Goes Insane” »

‘Prometheus’ Cut-Out Animation Trailer is Insane (And So Are Its Creators, Maybe)

Tuesday, 5th June 2012

As the creative interpretations of trailers/GOT scenes/topical pop culture phenom continue to pour in, sometimes I wonder if there’s only so much a guy can take.

Yet whether with Legos, bad costumes, and cardboard props, the cheap and Ed Wood-ian can often turn into something better than the actual thing.

Thank god that someone had the genius then to animate the entire Prometheus trailer with nothing but hand-drawn cutouts — Continue reading “‘Prometheus’ Cut-Out Animation Trailer is Insane (And So Are Its Creators, Maybe)” »
