The anime trailer for the upcoming crossover 3DS game Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney — astutely titled Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney — is getting some serious love this week.
With good reason, too: the animation looks almost Miyazaki-worthy in parts; there’s witches, fire, alternate universes; a cool, pseudo-steampunky setting; and, perhaps most importantly, the game looks to be equal parts Layton and Phoenix Wright game formats.
According to the game’s webpage, about half will take place in a Layton’d format of puzzle-style gaming, while the other half will take place in Wright’s world and be similar to Shu Takumi’s Attorney game designs. No reason this shouldn’t work– Wright has done the unthinkable and proved that you could make a game/cartoon about a lawyer and make it compelling, while Professor Layton ended up being one of the most successful DS franchises ever — so much so, in fact, that it ended up being a relatively successful theater release in Japan (at least as far as video game-to-movie films go).
A compilation of some of the more death-defying and tension-packed moments from the game makes for a pretty kick-ass trailer; too bad there’s still no word from Capcom on when it’s due to hit American/UK shores (the Japan release date is slated for November 29, 2012).

That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
