Disney has announced that it has acquired Lucasfilm LTD for $4.05 billion. In a stock and cash deal, all of the Lucas Film subsidiaries including, Lucasfilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound are all moving to Disney.
As part of the press release announcing the acquisition, Disney also said that Star Wars Episode 7 is scheduled for a 2015 release date.
You can watch Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger and George Lucas sign and discuss the announcement below.
On the gaming side of things we can see that game developer and publisher LucasArts is indeed included in the deal. As far as we can tell there is no change in the development of current game projects like Star Wars 1313 because of the acquisition. “For the time being all projects are business as usual,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson explained to GameInformer. “We are excited about all the possibilities that Disney brings.”

According to GameInformer during an investor’s call today Disney said that although it “will look opportunistically at console” games, the company is really more focused on mobile and social experiences. Even though the development of console title’s wont be a focus for Disney the company also mentioned that it is very interested in, “licensing rather than publishing. But we think given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, they lend themselves quite nicely to the other platforms.”
George Lucas explains in a statement about the reasons he has chosen to pass the torch on and allow new creative minds a chance to tell stories within the rich Star Wars universe:
“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas.“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.
“I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.”
Mr. Lucas feels that Disney will help Lucasfilm “blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”
According to Disney this deals really means that fans of Star Wars can expect a lot more product from the franchise in the coming years. Disney CEO Roger Iger said, “In 2015, we’re planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the ‘Disney-Lucasfilm’ brand…That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

Jace heads to the set of Law and Order: SVU to catch up with Ice – T and Coco and the Starcraft II team gets “rushed” by World of Warcraft Lead Designer, Jeff Kaplan.
Jace has decided to take advantage of his co-hosting duties at the Sony Online Entertainment Fan Faire celebration, by showing his new music video to the thousands of EverQuest players in attendance, much to the dismay of the crowd. That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
