This year at SXSW in Austin, Texas, a controversial marketing campaign put together by marketing agency BBH Labs and the Austin Front Steps Shelter paid homeless people to become wireless hotspots.
Following discovering homeless people walking around the event with t-shirts stating things like, “I’m Melvin, A 4G Hotspot– SMS HH Melvin to 25827 for Access,” several tech sites published reports claiming the campaign was exploitive.
According to a report from Associated Press, the homeless participants were paid Continue reading “Marketing Campaign Turns Homeless Into Wireless Hotspots At SXSW” »

One of the biggest mobile game publishers on the market, Gameloft, is getting set to introduce a new gaming feature on smartphones that was previously unavailable — in-game voice chat over 4G on Android devices.
Gameloft made things official at the Qualcomm booth during CES 2012 this month by announcing that they would initially be partnering with Verizon to roll the service out across devices on its 4G LTE network.
We now know the first game to get in-game chat will be Ashphalt 6: Adrenaline and the feature will be rolling out to users across various Gameloft titles later this year. Continue reading “Gameloft Rolling Out In-Game Voice Chat To Android Devices Later This Year” »

At first glance, the commercial seems plain enough; equal parts annoying and over-expensive , the consumate staples of any commercial advertising a cell-phone and/or network plan. But listen closely and the latest Holiday commercial from T-Mobile has quite a “unique message” that goes way beyond making sure you don’t drop any calls this holiday. Is T-Mobile suggesting that we’re now living in a world “For The Gays?”
“Stream movies and shows, It’s Santa to go! Walking in a FORGY wonderland”
Google FORGY and you’ll find the acronym: “For the Gays.” Is T-Mobile trying to tell us something? Continue reading “Is T-Mobile Trying to Send a Message With Commercial ‘For The Gays?’” »

With all of the HSPA+ devices being branded “4G” these days you’d think AT&T already had LTE-capable devices. The truth is they are just gearing up to launch the first two smartphones that take advantage of their 4G LTE network with the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid. Both devices will be available starting November 6th.
The HTC Vivid has a 960 x 540 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 8MP camera (f2.2 28mm wide angle lens), 1080p HD video recording (60 frames per second), and 16GB of on-board storage expandable to 32GB via microSD. This device will Continue reading “AT&T announces first 4G LTE smartphones- HTC Vivid and Galaxy S II Skyrocket coming November 6” »

Motorola just took the wraps off the newest RAZR, dubbed the Droid RAZR (Motorola RAZR outside the US) that we first got a look at through a series of teasers in the past weeks. The device sports a 960 x 540 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, microSD, 8-megapixel camera (1080p video capture), and 1.3-megapixel front-facing cam. The device also packs in a 1780mAh battery which the company claims will provide you with 12.5 hours talk time and 8.9 hours video playback.
As expected it will come with Android Gingerbread, but execs are quick to note it will get Ice Cream Sandwich when Google finally makes it available. It will also support Motorola’s own webtop platform, be capable of downloading HD Netflix vids, and of course, run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.
As for the physical design, expect that kevlar backside spotted earlier in the week, Corning Gorilla glass, and kevlar and aluminum accents throughout. Continue reading “Motorola unveils the 4G LTE Droid RAZR on Verizon” »

T-Mobile has made their version of Samsung’s Galaxy S II official today by giving us a solid October 10th date for pre-orders and a price of $229.
Of course we already know much about the Galaxy S II and T-Mobile’s variant isn’t much different. Sporting a similar 4.5-inch super AMOLED display as Sprint’s variant, the Epic 4G Touch, the main difference is the processor. In order to accommodate support for T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ 42 Mbps network, the device will include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor from Qualcomm, opposed to Samsung’s own Exnos processr found in most Galaxy S II’s. Looking to upgrade to a new Android device on Sprint? Starting today Samsung’s Galaxy S II variant, the Epic 4G Touch is officially available via the Sprint website. It’s gonna set you back $200 on the usual two year commitment, but the good news is you’ll be getting one of the better Android-powered smartphones on the market for much less than possible before now.
If you couldn’t bring yourself to part with $600+ for the unlocked Galaxy S II, the subsidized price will definitely make it easier to make the switch. The 4G WiMax-capable device sports a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display and an impressive 7.7-thin design. Most of the other hardware specs mirror its Galaxy S II counterpart available on other carriers.
