Since Apple released the iPhone 4S with Siri voice control baked in, the hacking community has come up with endless mods, some of which include a Hal 9000 inspired iPhone dock, mind-control hack, and even a voice over courtesy of GLaDOS from Portal.
Maybe the most entertaining mod yet comes to us from Music Hack Day 2011 in London where hacker Robert Boehnke rigged Siri to rap along to a rendition of ‘Hypnotize’ by Notorious B.I.G. Before we explain exactly how it was done, check out the video below.

Personally, why some people insist on seeing precious technology destroyed is beyond me, but that hasn’t stopped more companies hoping to go viral from coming up with new and creative ways to do it.
We already shared the iPhone 4S vs a Barrett M82 sniper rifle, watched it get strategically torn to pieces, and we’re all familiar with the Will It Blend guys, so the results of iPad vs Lava probably won’t surprise you…
It’s safe to assume this isn’t covered by AppleCare Continue reading “iPad 2 vs. Lava: Fight!” »

iFixit is known for their detailed teardowns of our favorite gadgets, most recently tearing Apple’s new iPhone 4S to pieces. If you’re like them, you can appreciate the design and aesthetic of the internal workings of your devices, and not just its polished outer casing. With that in mind, iFixit is offering a transparent glass rear panel kit for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 that will let you show off what the device is really made of.
Replacing your iPhone’s back panel is easier than you might think:
- Remove the two visible screws on either side of the thirty-pin dock connector
- Slide the current back panel up slightly and lift it off
- Repeat those steps in reverse to install the new panel.
If you’re a visual learner, iFixit has a complete step-by-step guide and a video walkthrough (below). Continue reading “Liberate Your iPhone with iFixit’s Transparent Rear Glass Panel Kit” »

If you weren’t willing to sign up on a two-year contract at the launch of the iPhone 4S, you’ll be happy to know that, as expected, Apple today began selling an unlocked iPhone 4S variant through their online store.

Have sales of the Galaxy S II (practically an iPhone 4 clone) allowed Samsung to pass Apple as the top smartphone vendor?
If the analysts are to be believed, Samsung did just exactly that, surpassing Apple during the third quarter with 27.8 million smartphone shipments in contrast to Apple’s 17.1 million. These numbers account for Samsung capturing 23.8 percent of the global smartphone market (in shipments) and Apple with 14.6 percent, this according to a report from Strategy Analytics market research firm. When Apple introduced the voice-controlled, AI personal assistant known as Siri on the new iPhone 4S, many speculated that like voice-control features in the past, it probably wouldn’t be ready for everyday use and would prove too frustrating to use.
However, it wasn’t long before people started to realize just how advanced the DARPA-developed tech is and how incredibly precise and useful Siri can truly be. That isn’t to say there aren’t bugs, and it’s certainly not perfect, but it can definitely open our eyes to a future that isn’t too far off from the voice-controlled computer systems Continue reading “HAL 9000 iPhone 4S dock lets you control Siri from 50 feet away” »

Ever wondered how much Apple actually pays to produce an iPhone? While these new stats from IHS iSuppli don’t exactly account for marketing, R&D, and other costs associated with ultimately brining a device to market, they do give you an idea of just how much it costs Apple to buy the parts necessary for their new iPhone 4S.
In a comparable estimate from last year’s iPhone 4, iSuppli’s analysis of their 4S teardown has revealed Apple pays an approximate bill of materials topping $188 for the 8GB 4S model. However, if you account for manufacturing costs, that number bumps up Continue reading “Apple pays $188 per iPhone 4S…How much do you pay?” »

The video below shows CEO of Softbank Masayoshi Son talking about a call Apple CEO Tim Cook received from Jobs at the 4S launch. As we know, this is the day before Apple announced Jobs had passed away, giving us a glimpse into the fact Jobs worked on products right until the very end.
Quote via PCMag:
“I visited Apple for the announcement of the iPhone 4S. When I was having a meeting with Tim Cook, he said, ‘Oh Masa, sorry I have to quit our meeting.’ I said, ‘Where are you going?’ He said, ‘My boss is calling me.’ That was the day of the announcement of the iPhone 4S. He said that Steve is calling me because he wants to talk about their next product. And the next day, he died.”

Following the record-breaking one million pre-orders, Apple announced today that they have sold over four million units of the iPhone 4S in three days since it’s launch on Friday, October 14.
In addition to that staggering number, which breaks down to about 1,000 iPhones per minute (or 16 per second), the company also announced over 20 million iCloud signups and 25 million iOS 5 upgrades. Since the iPhone 4S was launched to the public on Friday, October 14th, it has already broken pre-order records, been taken apart, and now launched into space as a tribute to Steve Jobs and smashed to pieces in a drop test against the Galaxy S II.
The guys over at Final Cut King just posted this video (below) showing two iPhone 4Ss going into space attached to a weather balloon and landing safely thanks to a parachute and cases from OtterBox. Some are calling this video out as being a fake, however, as FinalCutKing is known for his visual effect and Final Cut Pro skills. You be the judge. Here’s an explanation uploaded with the video: Continue reading “Apple’s iPhone 4S lands safely from space but fails in drop test” »

In case you were wondering about some of the previously unspecified specs of Apple’s new iPhone 4S, the guys over at iFixit have done their usual teardown of the new device and, among other things, found out the specifics on the device’s RAM and new Qualcomm chip.

iPhone 4S (Siri): “42″

Just in case you haven’t yet gotten your hands on a pre-order of Apple’s iPhone 4S (which will launch publicly tomorrow), you may have to wait at least a few weeks to get the device. As several news outlets are reporting, all carriers are listing shipping times at three or four weeks, meaning if you haven’t already placed your pre-order, you won’t be getting your device delivered tomorrow along with everyone else.

It’s been almost a week since Apple unveiled the voice-controlled Siri personal assistant feature as an exclusive to the new iPhone 4S, and we already have a video mocking it. Why bother? Out of excitement for the iPhone 4S and Portal 2 DLC, of course.
The video below made by Jeff Heimbuch shows the latest Apple ad overdubbed with a voiceover sounding a lot like GLaDOS from Portal. The voice isn’t perfect, as it was made using a number of computer programs and not 100% accurate to the original, but it sounds close enough to complete the effect. Make of it what you will, but Vodafone Germany has prematurely added ordering options to their website related to the iPhone 4S and an 8GB iPhone 4.
Of course there is no way of knowing whether or not these just are placeholders in preparation for tomorrow’s unveiling. Interestingly, Vodafone lists the iPhone 4S in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants, confirming previous reports. The site also lists all three models in both black and white.

With all of the rumors surrounding a next-gen iPhone, expected to launch on October 4th as of latest reports, there is still some confusion over the branding of the device(s). Some say it will be the “iPhone 5″, others think only a refreshed iPhone 4 called the “4S” will be unveiled. There are also many who still think we’ll see both devices come October. Analysts and bloggers alike expected T-Mobile to get their hands on the iPhone 5 when it launches sometime (we hope) in October. However, it looks like the carrier’s Chief Marketing Officer Cole Broadman has confirmed they will in fact NOT be getting the device, at least not before the holidays. The image on the right is a mock up of what the iPhone 5 could possibly look like based on an icon discovered by our friends over at 9to5Mac in the latest Photo Stream beta.
The icon strangely doesn’t resemble a current Apple product that we know of, leading many to believe Apple has changed the icon for iOS 5 elements in order to closer resemble the next-gen iPhone. Notice the elongated yet shorter Home button, and the dimensions of the casing surrounding the display. Continue reading “Is this what the iPhone 5 looks like?” »
