BatmanArkhamOriginsI loved Batman: Arkham Asylum. Rocksteady’s first entry in the now-franchised Arkham games was a masterclass in game design and mythology adaptation that wove combat, stealth, and the general sense of “being Batman” into a high-class game that hadn’t felt like anything I’d played before. By bringing back Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy and Arleen Sorkin to voice their characters from Batman: The Animated Series, they were able to create a cartoony-yet familiar aesthetic that updated the noir-influenced style of the 90′s animated show, and to top it off, by slinging players through a rogue’s gallery, created a game that really felt quintessentially “Batman.”

So why does the news about Batman: Arkham Origins worry me? Mostly because I played Arkham City. Which despite containing many of the same ingredients as Arkham Asylum, felt as nowhere near a satisfying experience.

There were a lot of reasons Arkham Asylum worked, and I’ll admit one of them was novelty. Even though the core combat wasn’t that dissimilar from other combo-based brawlers of the time period, the game’s integration of stealth and puzzle solving contributed to a unique sense of flow that catered to Batman fans of all generations. If Rocksteady decides to create a third Batman iteration in the Arkham series of games it looks as though award winning writer Paul Dini wont be around to see it.

According to Game Informer Dini recently said that he wont be writing for the next Arkham game, does this spell disaster for an otherwise flawless game franchise?

Last week Gameloft teased us with the second trailer, seen below, for the official movie-tie-in game, The Dark Knight Rises for iOS. The game is now available in the New Zealand App Store for $9.99 and is expected to appear in the U.S App Store very soon for $6.99 (via 9to5mac).

Widely hailed as one of the greatest things to come out of Denmark since this guy, The Raveonettes walk a big fuzzy line between the spectral melodies of David Lynch composer Angelo Badalaenti and dance punk. They’re known for their ambient, haunting electronic minimalist melodies and ethereal keyboard work – not exactly the stuff of Hans Zimmer or really even Danny Elfman, the two longtime composers for the Batman franchise. Batman Geeks, take note: This is how you pay tribute to Batman–by namedropping all of them! First, take a look at this picture below.

If that doesn’t fill you with some kind of collective nerdgasm I don’t know what will. Batman Beyond. Frank Miller’s the Dark Knight Returns. Batman the Animated Series. All these iterations of Batmen can be played in Arkham Asylum, for the low low price of—probably several hundred dollars. Continue reading “How to be ALL THE BATMEN in Arkham City” »
