There are some who believe tere is nothing that can be done about bullying – perhaps because until the internet and/or movies, they didn’t know exactly how bad of a problem bullying was? Or perhaps for whatever reason, they just didn’t want to take on the issue?
The good news is that a recently published book by author Emily Bazelon has given us an extensive look at the complications of dealing with bullies, and even more importantly, SOLUTIONS on how to solve the issue. The book is called Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Re-Discovering the Power of Character and Empathy. I stumbled onto the book not long after seeing clips from the film “Bully”, where I was left staring at a blank screen long after the film’s credits had wrapped, recalling the times I’d been made fun of in the past. He’s back…albeit this time Charlie Sheen is covering a different subject matter. The man who set the world record for the fastest to 1 million twitter followers once again returned to the online platform to make this following statement regarding his daughter being (in his words) forced out of school because she was incessantly bullied: Continue reading “Charlie Sheen Asks Fans On Twitter To Rise Up, Send Dog-Sh#t to Daughter’s Bullies” »

A whopping 80% of High School Students see bullying EVERY week, according to a study published by DoSomething.org, with only 3% of students claiming that “BULLYING WAS NOT AN ISSUE AT ALL.” As if both those statistics weren’t alarming enough, the same study reported that only about HALF of students reported any peer intervention.
While these numbers probably don’t sound inaccurate to those who suffer the consequences of bullying, some are calling into question the validity of such claims, mainly because the study was conducted via facebook. “Parents should ban their children from playing the violent video game”…these were the words of a coroner after a 14 year old boy hung himself.
Prepare yourselves for a story that can only be described in one word: awful.
Here are the full details as we know them via The Telegram, the 14 year old boy got into a fight with his mother after being grounded for “hanging out with his girlfriend too late” the night before. He was sent to his room, where his mother believed he was going onto the computer to look at facebook/youtube/kill time like the rest of us. By now the story of Karen Klein is synonymous with images of a poor middle aged woman being bullied and tormented by students on a bus. Now Klein will be taking some of that money and using it for a great cause.
When a Toronto-based man decided to start a fund in hopes of being able to send Klein on a much-deserved vacation, donations from around the world poured in totaling nearly $700,000. Nearly 4 months later, Klein has decided to invest $100,000 of that to start “The No Bully Tour”, accompanied by Miss Teen USA Logan West (who has been a huge proponent of anti-bullying legislation, having been bullied herself). Despite the seemingly endless amount of protest on behalf of bullying victims, it often doesn’t look like we’re any closer to a solution of any kind. Take The Dignity for All Students Act, for instance, which was signed into law back in 2010. Designed to take bigger steps in preventing bullying, you’d almost think that it had made things worse over the past two years: Between the outrage that 68 year-old bus monitor Karen Klein generated on her behalf about a month ago, the Darth Vader kid on the bus, and the Japanese student who committed suicide last week (which many believe was partly due to his teachers), it seems like most bullies are keeping up not only their habit, but continuing to provide Internet users with taped evidence on their iPhones.
Still, a mere two days into this week, there’s been a huge movement on behalf of legislators and parents alike to stop bullying altogether. Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law official anti-bullying legislation which will take bigger steps towards stopping bullying. In yet another bully story, this version brought to us by the great people over at Reddit, a student faces some pretty viscous verbal harassment for wearing a Darth Vader helmet — which reportedly was meant to stave off attacks from his peers.
There’s not a great deal of information to go with the story, and the video doesn’t depict that same level of abuse that we saw in the bus incident several weeks ago, but it again brings the issue of bullying to the forefront.
The child was reportedly taunted for his love of Star Wars Continue reading “Student Wears Darth Vader Helmet to Fight Off Bullies” »

Even as viral videos of bullying continue to surface — the latest of which featured 68 year-old bus monitor Karen Klein, taunted by students over everything from her job to the suicide of her own son — often overlooked are the few theorists who’ve come forward, offering their own explanations over what causes bullying to begin with.
The latest is a licensed professional counselor, Brett Ellard, who firmly believes that the root cause of such behavior, in both males and females, could be the lack of an authentic father figure in life. Continue reading “Could Not Having a Father Figure Be the Root Cause of Bullying?” »

When 68 year-old bus attendant Karen Klein signed on for duty as a bus attendant in upstate New York’s Rochester School District, chances are she knew she’d have to take some grief (we all remember lunch ladies).
But she probably didn’t know it would get to this level. Warning: brutal jeers and taunts ahead…
The video begins with one student poking at Klein with a book, before the other kids really start in on her with a series of cruel barbs. The sound’s a bit off but you can still hear one student’s particular barb, which says that “(Klein’s family members) all killed themselves because they didn’t want to be near you.” Continue reading “VIRAL VIDEO: Students Brutally Taunt Bus Monitor; Supporters Offer Retirement Money” »

Today, an “anti-bullying” bill failed to make its way through the Illinois Senate for the second time in as many tries (ironically on the same day that this Illinois Senator went crazy).
The bill “would require Illinois schools to create anti-bullying programs and fully explain how they would investigate bullying instances.” All of that on the surface makes a lot of sense, which based on the tradition that is politics, was probably why it was defeated…by one vote.
“The Senate essentially ignored all professional opinions and evidence about effective bullying prevention strategies. HB 5290 would have fixed the Continue reading “Why We Are Afraid of (Stopping) Bullying” »

If SOPA said anything, it’s that jerks are trying to destroy the future of the internet, not that they are the future in and of itself.
But hold the phone, an infographic is now involved, and it portends that the internet (social media) is paving the road for jerk-offs to flourish. The following stats coming from onlincounselingdegrees.net and reaction, from yours truly.
According to the photo, 33.2 million teenagers in America use social media, 90% of which are on facebook. A reported 15% report “meanness”, something that on the surface a) seems tough to measure and given that b) sounds awfully low. Continue reading “Are Jerks The Future of The Internet?” »

It was little under two weeks ago that the documentary Bully was being hit with an R Rating, because it includes the word fuck a reported six times (apparently bullies, amongst other things, have quite a foul mouth).
The recent announcement today is that the Weinstein Company, which financed the film, will go ahead with the film being unrated, rather than have it suffer an R rating.
Said BULLY Director Lee Hirsch, “The small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real. It’s what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in.” Continue reading ““Bully” Rejects R Rating: Will Go Out Unrated” »

President Obama will appear in a new Cartoon Network documentary which extensively targets bullying.
Comprised of interviews from athletes, such as tennis pro Venus Williams, NBA star Chris Webber, and a bunch of NASCAR drivers (who we’ll call athletes for simplicity’s sake), the 30-minute doc will also feature some candid footage of the President himself speaking on the subject of bullying.
The President’s taken a pretty active stance against bullying during his tenure as U.S. President, especially with Continue reading “Cartoon Network and President Obama Team Up to Take on Bullying” »

On the surface the bill has good intentions, one of the first efforts by the State of Michigan to curb the frequency of bullying in schools. But according to lawmakers on the opposition, the bill does nothing for the issue, in some cases, it could make things even worse for children that suffer constant harrassment from their peers.
The bill being sent through Michigan’s state legislation is called “Matt’s Safe School Law,” named after Matt Epling, a Michigan student who committed suicide in 2002 after being a victim of chronic bullying. As a tease for his still-untitled 5th studio album, 50 Cent has released two singles — “Love, Hate, Love,” and “The Enforcer.” The latter track may be diss-free, but “Love” is full of ‘em, and they’re aimed primarily at Lil Wayne and Game.
As writer Brittny Pierre wisely points out, all this despite the rapper joining the anti-bullying campaign and writing an anti-bullying book for kids.

It’s now the second most popular video on the internet, right behind a 15 year old girl singing about her favorite day of the week. Casey, the Australian boy suspended for body slamming a kid for taunting, has inspired editors to come up with their own renditions of the event, including this Street Fighter Zangief video.
