In this day and age, nearly everything revolves around technology, but the relative stagnancy of the U.S. education system is holding us back. According to Code.org, 60% of all math and science related jobs are computer programming jobs, yet computer science students comprise a minuscule 2% of math and science students. While this could be attributed to a lack of interest or a variety of other issues, Code.org sites that nine out of ten schools do not offer programming courses and coding classes don’t even count towards high school graduation requirements in 41 out of the 50 United States.

It has been more than half a decade since we last saw Agent 47 in action, but tomorrow the wait is finally over when Hitman: Absolution hits store shelves. The review scores for the Square Enix published title are already popping up online and, although not surprising, they are all over the map ranging from a 6.9 from Gametrailers to a 9.0 from IGN.
The Hitman series has always been regarded as somewhat if a niche game and even with all the steps the developers have taken to please everyone, it looks as though the newest iteration in the series has remained that way.

Yesterday it was the news of a new live action Halo series coming this fall, and like Dragon Age and Assassins Creed before it, Ghost Recon Future Soldier will also be receiving the same treatment. The film, titled Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Alpha, will be a 25 minute prequel to the upcoming game.
The short film features an award winning list of filmmakers. The film is directed by Academy Award winning directors Hervé de Crécy and François Alaux, and the script is penned by the Oscar nominee Tim Sexton as well as George Pruss. Last but not least the film will feature cinematography by Trant Opaloch of District 9 fame.

If you thought public schools were getting tougher on dress code policy, it’ll simply pale in comparison to what the European Chess Union makes aspiring chess masters endure via their wardrobe while playing tourneys there. Maybe it was the this pic — featuring mind-numbingly gorgeous Belarusian chess master Anna Sharevich mentally mapping out who’s gonna jump the king — which got the guild’s panties into a wad.
No word on exactly whose brilliant idea this was, though it was female European Chess Union Secretary Sava Stojsavljevic who verified that Continue reading “European Chess Union Prefers You Not to Show Your Boobs During a Game” »

The online project-funding site Kickstarter has been in a lot of headlines as of late. First we told you about two Kickstarter projects that reached 1 million dollars in funding, and just today a 17-inch Windows tablet being built by a 12-year old. However, an interesting new take on game development (via The Verge) is definitely something that has our attention. Rather than just an online course, “Code Hero” aims to teach you how to build games through a first-person videogame.
Alex Peake and Primer Labs have come up with the innovative and intuitive way to learn how to code games and hope you’re interested in making their plans come to reality. Built on the Unity 3D Engine, Code Hero uses a series of missions and, for the most part, familiar mechanics to both teach the player about coding and allow them to build their own Untiy games while playing. A new project/promotion available through online coding tutorial site Codecademy will let you learn how to code through interactive tutorials once a week throughout 2012. As Slate notes- the ones who turned us on to the site- “learning to code is becoming as important as knowing how to read and write”.
Founders of the Codecademy (pronounced Code Academy) startup Ryan Bubinski and Zach Sims are urging beginner coders to sign up for a new course that provides one lesson a week over the next year as their New Year’s resolution. Each lesson takes about five hours to complete, so you can get each one done spending around an hour a day during the work week.
According the website Codecademy has up for the project, around 149,183 people have signed up for “Code Year”. The lessons appear to be completely free and the rest of Codecademy’s JavaScript courses are as well.
