Ex-Power Rangers. Some of them end up leading pretty interesting lives after they take off those visored, spandex suits. That may mean going on to low budget, straight to DVD movies; it may mean being convicted of some brutal murders.
In the case of Jason David Frank, it may actually mean becoming the closest actual thing to a Power Ranger that there is, and karate chopping through pinewood while skydiving. Continue reading “Ex Power-Ranger Sets World Record for Karate Chopping Blocks of Wood…While Skydiving” »

For this year’s annual 2013 Anime Los Angeles Convention, an extensive anti-harassment policy/warning was included in the official event programs being handed out, with this key warning:
“Harassment of any kind, including physical, verbal or unwelcoming attention, will not be tolerated.”
While this isn’t the first time that the ALA has featured such anti-harassment policies, similar and extensive harassment notices are now becoming more widespread at such industry events, says the L.A. Weekly. But is this likely to really change anything?

Amongst the performers at this year’s Nerdathon concert (sort of a Nerdapalooza Jr, held at Comic-Con each year), El Gun Legro is receiving perhaps the most attention. And somewhat deservedly, according to several eyewitnesses who took to their blogs to vote him the unofficial nerdiest (and nuttiest).
According to nerdreactor, there’s a lot to credit for this: not only is he a capable rap artist, but he is also pretty…strange. Continue reading “Daily Nerdcore: Rapper El Gun Legro Really Likes Kung Fu, Might Be A Little Crazy” »

At Comic-Con we got a look at brand new screenshots of some of the epic boss battles we will be encountering in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (below). Also over the weekend an illusive screenshot of what appears to be a presentation screen for Metal Gear Solid 5, creating much speculation that the game will be announced soon.
You can check out all of the new screenshots from SDCC below. The images show some of the bosses Raiden will be encountering as well some of the game’s setting. According to Gameinformer, who went hands on with the game at SDCC, the controls are tight and they “loved slowing down time to aim” Raiden’s blade. Yesterday a message from Comic-Con’s official twitter account asked fans not to line up at the San Diego Convention Center until organizers were able to complete the setup process.
Today the Hollywood Reporter reports that a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing the street to hold her place in line for Thursday’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ panel.
The victim was identified as 53 year old Twilight Continue reading “Twilight Fan Hit By Car, Killed At Comic Con” »

Being that there’s really not much movie news at Comic-con this year (at least compared to previous years), it’s been postulated that the convention doesn’t do what it used to for the big movie studios. A prefect example: Green Lantern and Tron didn’t do anywhere near the business bigwigs had hoped they would do. Someone ought to tell these people that it wasn’t the convention that was to blame.
The great news is that there’s actually more actual comic and other pop-culture news to celebrate. One news item of interest at Comic-Con 2011 is Sideway, a 3D video game that’s being touted as the hip-hop version of Mario Bros. Here’s a link to gameplay. In the game, the main character is Gox, a graffiti artist who actually gets sucked into his own artwork. He’s befriended by a guy named Spray who tells him that a villain named Fume is out to destroy them all (Get it?), and Gox must do something to save the graffiti world.
The Mario Bros. influences are rampant, according to players: you can ‘jump high’ and do a ‘double jump push,’ like in the old Mario Bros. games. He can jump on peoples’ heads and ‘hold the jump button to make him float down on spray paint.’ You can also collect spray paint cans, much in the way Mario collected coins.
But best-looking of all is the rotating 3-D environment of buildings and alleyways in which you control Gox, allowing him to slide along the sides of buildings almost like flowing water. Looks pretty amazing and trippy as hell, and it’s ind of cool to bring the beloved Mario gameplay to this world.

Everybody knows that Voltron is one of the most beloved anime cartoons in the history of the world, both in its native Japan and around the world (especially in the US). So the prospect of the 5 big ass lions joining up to form a blazing sword and kick robeast ass in live action was big news — especially at last month’s Comic-Con 2011 – where word was mum on the subject last year. Errr, gonna make an apology here guys. That post we did about Comic-Com losing its clout maaaay have been a bit premature. For one, io9′s pointed out how TV is the new hot thing at Comic-Con, and while the Avengers may not (or may?) be making a presence, Game of Thrones, the Guild, and others will be storming the gates. For two, the Mass Effect movie is finally making an appearance.
All we know so far is this Continue reading “Fight for the Lost at Comic-Con 2011–the Mass Effect Movie is coming!” »

Stan Lee was told that he could play one video during his appearance at Comic-Con, and he chose his debut on the Jace Hall Show Season 3, Episode 3.
Jace originally thought he was going to discuss a big project idea with Stan and to build off the success of ABC’s “V” but it turns out that Stand and Gil Champion, of Pow Entertainment, had other ideas.
Check out the fan reactions to the clip:
And the original Episode itself:

It’s been a good decade to be a geek—since the massive success of Batman Begins back in 2004, movie companies have been more comfortable greenlighting projects designed to suck in the avid geek crowd. It should’ve been win-win: Geeks love to be excited about things, and studios like having a built in audience for their movies.
Well, sort of. Thanks to the not-exactly-succes-okay-more-like-failures of last year’s Scott Pilgrim Versus the World and Tron Legacy at the box office, which were expected to do well on account of their huge reactions at Comic-Con, many studios are pulling out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
The New York Times is reporting that Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks are already not in attendance, and Marvel’s on the fence about making an appearance.
In previous years, Comic-Con was a supposed mythical hype machine for upcoming films—the fans are excited to be there and getting sneak peeks, and would go out and give glowing praise on the internet to help spread word of mouth. For some reason though, that massive excitement didn’t always translate into ticket sales, and bombs like Scott Pilgrim were the result.
The lack of major presence at Comic-Con may not be so much a backlash against geek culture though as it is big-budget movies. Over at the Escapist, Moviebob gives a great explanation about why the failure of these geek-favorite movies led to the death of Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
Additionally, ever since the shmorzaborg of 2007′s big-budget releases, which went upwards of $300 Million (Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End, and Spider-Man 3), which didn’t really generate enough sales to warrant such huge budgets, Hollywood’s been cutting back and trimming down. The latest Pirates film clocked in at a much more modest reported budget of around $240 million.
So, while Comic-Con should still be a fun time for all, you might want to count on the possibility that The Avengers won’t have any kind of appearance.
