Four months after the Sandy Hook massacre, the gaming industry is trying its best to regain footing with parents — not only in Newtown, but in cities across the country. Along with freshly raised concerns that video games could very well be a catalyst for real-life violence, the Obama Administration’s ‘gaming task force’ continues to investigate the link between the two further.
Don’t think of it as damage control so much as ‘a re-education campaign’, consisting of public awareness advertisements, delivered both televised and literary format. But will it do any actual good? Continue reading “Gaming Industry Launches PSA Campaign To Improve Reputation With Parents” »

Jerry lambert is well known for his recurring role as Kevin Butler in Playstation commercials. But he has recently teamed up with Bridgestone to create and star in a number of commercials for the company and Sony is not happy about it (via GT).
A more recent Bridgestone commercial, starring Lambert, that allows customers a chance to win a Nintendo Wii U has prompted Sony to take legal action.
Sony has confirmed that on Sept 11 it filed a lawsuit against Bridgestone and the production company behind the commercials, Wildcat Creek Inc. Jerry Lambert is the president of Wildcat Creek. Continue reading “Daily Gaming: Sony Sues Tire Company for “Stealing” Kevin Butler” »

Fans of The Jace Hall Show fondly remember Producer Todd Roy’s attempt to make a game trailer for Sony Online Entertainment’s epic MMOFPS PlanetSide 2. The result was…um, different, than most video game trailers, and resembled more of a used car commercial than a trailer promoting one of the most massive shooters in the history of gaming.
Front and center as the face of the trailer and the main man behind the scenes of PlanetSide 2 is Creative Director Matt Higby. We decided to get his thoughts on the interpretation of the commercial, what it takes to make it in the video game industry, and what makes PlanetSide 2 so different from the competition. Political movements are a dime a dozen these days, with political primaries hitting their stride and dousing us with TV advertisments that would even make most cell phone companies wonder “where does the money came from?”
But here’s a commercial that gets it; a video that doesn’t shove a message down our throats but conceptualizes a problem in a way where we can all understand it…using something that’s become something of a lost art: humor. You’d think he should be able to go wherever he wants, being a Sith lord and everything, but apparently every stormtrooper on the Death Star just came from a celebratory kegger (maybe it’s finally fully operational), as this phone commercial shows Vader waiting to use the can with his own troops.
Yes, you heard right — this is actually an ad for the new Korean cell phone mobile carrier company called Olleh. The product being touted is known as the Olleh lte ‘Warp’, which explains the random scenes in which Vader and his troops warp to get where they need to go. The result is pretty fun to watch — hey who don’t like seein’ sh*t get blowed up good?! — but also pretty straightforward compared to the amazing Guns video from summer. So much so that one wonders who had more creative control, the company or the creative talent. Continue reading “EA Hires Out ‘Dubstep Guns’ Creators to Make Battlefield 3 Commercial” »

At first glance, the commercial seems plain enough; equal parts annoying and over-expensive , the consumate staples of any commercial advertising a cell-phone and/or network plan. But listen closely and the latest Holiday commercial from T-Mobile has quite a “unique message” that goes way beyond making sure you don’t drop any calls this holiday. Is T-Mobile suggesting that we’re now living in a world “For The Gays?”
“Stream movies and shows, It’s Santa to go! Walking in a FORGY wonderland”
Google FORGY and you’ll find the acronym: “For the Gays.” Is T-Mobile trying to tell us something? Continue reading “Is T-Mobile Trying to Send a Message With Commercial ‘For The Gays?’” »

If you frequent any tech sites it would be hard to ignore the ongoing litigation between Apple and Samsung, specifically stemming from Apple’s claims that Samsung “slavishly copy” the iPhone and iPad with their Galaxy smartphone and tablet lineups. Despite several temporary bans on Samsung products abroad, the company remains Apple’s fiercest competitor in the smartphone business. That’s why it’s not all that surprising their new ads take a “Mac vs PC” approach by pitting themselves against Apple and mocking iPhone users in the process.
Depicting what is clearly supposed to be exhausted Apple fans waiting in line to get their new iPhones, an Android user approaches and begins to explain how his Galaxy S II stacks up. It isn’t the first time, however, the image above from Samsung’s Facebook page is calling the iPhone “old school” Continue reading “Samsung Continues With The Anti-Apple iPhone Bashing Ads” »

The latest in Michael Bay’s portfolio of action films is actually quite short — it’s merely a 2-minute long commercial for the latest Need for Speed game, The Run.
Everyone knows that Michael Bay’s bread and butter is his action sequences…and if there are cars involved, they will be flying down the road at some point, usually hurled towards a protagonist we’re indifferent towards.
So we’re happy to say that this is just Michael Bay doing what he does best, and man Continue reading “Michael Bay Takes “Need for Speed” Commercial for a Spin, Blows Up Every Car in Sight” »

One of the most entertaining pieces of Harrison Ford on film might be some brand-new doc-style footage of him playing Uncharted 3 for a Japanese television commercial — if only for some totally gee-whiz, Leave it To Beaver moments like, “Man, the graphics are so…realistic.”
Then it’s “Fantastic!” and “Incredible!” and “so…cinematic!” and watching him, you can’t help but think that it borders on being a bit extraneous — but Harrison’s enthusiasm hasn’t seemed this genuine since he shot Greedo first, or at least pummeled IRA ass in Patriot Games. Moviebob may have had a point before that it was sad that the corporate spacecraft were going to probably be the future of space flight—buut you know what, who cares, WE’RE GOING BACK TO SPACE!
The US government today announced it had signed conracts with Virgin Galactic and XCOR–the two companies pursuing the first commercial flights to space–or, actually, a really REALLY low orbit that technically qualifies as space. The contract is to aid NASA scientists in the pursuit of further research, and help them continue the projects that were scrubbed with the end of the shuttle program.
This could be bigger though–if Virgin and XCOR keep improving their tech, it could see the return fo the United States to its own way to space–heck, you can go right NOW with these companies for a $102,000 ticket. (which Katy Perry and Russell Brand will be doing…)
And since it’s the commercial companies, we’ll be seeing the first government-approved use of Spaceports–like airports but for…oh you get it. While it won’t be like the fictionalized ones we’ve seen in movies like Avatar or Treasure Planet…it’s a Spaceport. The word alone is awesome.
