PowerUp is a classic style side scrolling space shooter that recently caught our eye on Kickstarter. The side scrolling shooter is currently being created by one-man-dev-team Mike Hanson with plans to be released on consoles, mobile devices and PC.
Heavily inspired by classic sci-fi schmups like Project-X and Hellfire, PowerUp features “modern rendered 3D graphics,” unique weapon mechanics and epic boss battles while still maintaing that addictive and chaotic feel of the classics.

To celebrate the release of its f2P PS Vita game, Samurai and Dragons, Sega will be offering some exclusive DLC to players: colorful anime-style depictions of the main characters, each drawn by some of today’s top anime artists.
Each babe will correspond with a legendary Sega console. Why? Not exactly sure, but it might be enough to get some old school 8-Bit Sega aficionados to dust off their old Master Systems. Continue reading “Classic Sega Consoles, Re-Imagined as Hot Anime Girls” »

Many have been wondering whether or not Blizzard would bring Diablo III to consoles some day. The company has been mildly teasing us with the idea for nearly a year now.
We know that the action-RPG dungeon crawler is currently running and playable on consoles internally at Blizzard, and now Polygon has had a chance to catch up with the developer’s chief creative officer, Rob Pardo, to find out more about the situation.
Pardo, who was recently promoted to CCO, said that even though the company isn’t quite ready to talk about console plans for Diablo III just yet, Blizzard does have console builds up and running and that they are looking really good.

Today Nintendo has confirmed the existence of the rumored Wii Mini. Several leaks over the past few days claimed the the rumored console was on it’s way.
We now know that Nintendo will be releasing a stripped down version of the original Wii on December 7th (via IGN). The catch is that, at this point, the console is a Canadian exclusive with no mention of it being released in other regions. The Wii Mini has a suggested retail price of $99.99. Check out the images of the newly redesigned console below.

On the same day it was announced the PS3 had caught up with the XBOX 360 in console sales (now at 70 million) details began to leak on the next generation of the Sony gaming console (via Gnet).
The console for some time now has been dubbed “Orbis”, mainly because the Japanese word for four is “Shi” which also means “Death” (ironically of note, the “X” may mark the spot with U.S. Xbox fans, but in Japanese culture “X” is a negative sign used to express defeat — which is why it’s subbed out for “O” on PS controllers). Late last night a tweet from Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb hinted that the company plans on “celebrating” in some way with users that have been with Xbox Live since it was first introduced. At that time no other details were known until images of a special edition 10th anniversary Xbox 360 starting appearing online.
Kotaku received images of the special edition console from a reader. Apparently the reader’s friend received the console in the mail inside a box designed with Xbox Live 10th Birthday graphics, “Xbox Live, a decade of entertainment” ( below).

Along with the incredibly successful launch of Assassin’s Creed 3 we are now hearing about a complete anthology bundle coming for the franchise.
Ubisoft said that the estimated sales of AC3 in the first week surpassed 3.5 million which the company said is a 100% year-over-year increase from the last title. Now Ubisoft plans to release every console game in the franchise in a complete collectors edition anthology.
Rumors began this morning when a Russian fan site reported that details of the bundle emerged on Amazon France.

This Week in Video Game History celebrates the birthday of a highly successful video game console, a horribly unsuccessful video game console and the five year anniversary of a cult classic film.
On August 14, 1989 the Sega Genesis made it’s North American debut, officially ushering in the 16-bit era on this side of the ocean. While Sega’s first ads for the system touted it’s arcade-quality graphics and games, it wouldn’t be long before they began to taunt the previously unbeatable Nintendo, who didn’t counter with the Super NES until two years later. If there was any lingering doubt as to the fate of the console (and if you like consoles at all), General Manager of Ngmoco Sweden Ben Cousins has bad news for you: console gaming is basically in its death throes.
It’s not quite as simple as mobile destroying console-gaming overnight; Cousins believes that there’s a few different steps behind this inevitable process, though at the very most they will take about 5-10 years.
STEP 1: Mobile Kills Console. According to Continue reading “Ngmoco/Former EA Guy Predicts the Death of Console Gaming (It’s Coming Sooner Than You Think)” »

Judge for yourself, but when a guy takes the time to collect every single gaming console that’s been invented over the past 25 years or so, he deserves props of some kind. Courtesy of the pseudo-macro blog comes YouTube-er 16bitghost, also a dedicated blogger, and owner of a bunch of rare gaming music CDs of all kinds.
His collection also appears to contain every handheld known to man – including a rare collection of Game Boys, and the hand-held TurboGrafx 16.There’s even all four limited edition color PS3s.

I’ll admit that I haven’t brought a lunch box…well, anywhere, for a little over a year. But that might be changing right about now, given the latest creation from Etsy extraordinaire Luke Blackford.
It’d dubbed rather simply “The Nintendo Entertainment System Lunch Box” and is reportedly made out of an old console and hallowed out, so you can fill it in with your favorite lunch time cuisine.

for those of you who were aware video game consoles are banned in China (I’m guessing most of you in China, are) this might comes as surprising news. The recent announcement of a new video game console availabe in chinese retail markets apparently sidesteps the console ban that has been in place since 2000.
Despite the fact the majority of consoles are MANUFACTURED in the Pearl River Delta region of southern china, The Chinese government has refused to allow the SALE of video game consoles to its own people, stating it would be:

It was yay over a week ago that a story was published proclaiming the dangers of online gaming and FPS. Now, word has spread that the US military is funding an effort to mine data from what they believe to be “dirty” consoles, buying and hacking into consoles from FOREIGN markets.
“This project requires the purchasing of used video game systems outside the US in a manner that is likely to result in their containing significant and sensitive information from previous users,” according to a statement by the US Navy.
