Now manga artists have designed a series of posters featuring Matsumiya in sorta-revealing police outfits and wielding a very big baton (or taser maybe). Continue reading “Japanese City Uses (Real-Life) Manga Character to Fight Crime, Sing Songs” »

Picture 2For this year’s annual 2013 Anime Los Angeles Convention, an extensive anti-harassment policy/warning was included in the official event programs being handed out, with this key warning:

“Harassment of any kind, including physical, verbal or unwelcoming attention, will not be tolerated.”

While this isn’t the first time that the ALA has featured such anti-harassment policies, similar and extensive harassment notices are now becoming more widespread at such industry events, says the L.A. Weekly. But is this likely to really change anything?

Tony Harris’ comments over the cosplay industry (specifically, the girls in it) have triggered an avalanche of responses — some good, many not-so-good, others downright angry. Certain prominent figures in the cosplay/geek world, like Jill Pantozzi, have issued a few choice words; several male bloggers like Alex Hern have responded with equal disdain.

Not satisfied with the responses thus far, however, we wanted to get some more reactions from both cosplayers and industry pros alike.

Here’s what a few of them had to say.

Tony Harris is a comics artist and writer who’s penned such titles as Starman (no relation to the Jeff Bridges movie), Iron Man, and Ex-Machina. He’s been widely revered as one of the industry’s best and brightest for years. He’s also been nominated five times for an Eisner Award.

That didn’t stop him from receiving an avalanche of angry responses from fans and detractors alike, primarily over a comment he made Monday regarding the world of cosplay — specifically, female cosplayers (and their alleged phoniness). All right, so that’s not quite the way I intended it to sound… this is more about hot cosplay ladies paying tribute to the world of cosplay, and how cool it is to dress up in costumes, all the while singing along to Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.”

This comes to us via TheMarySue and features some incredibly detailed costumes (that Mystique may be the next best thing we could ask for next to Rebecca Romiijn) and very high production value.

Cosplay isn’t for everyone — after all you’ve got to get your wardrobe together, get dressed up and of course find a way to drive to the convention without being flagged down by a police officer for pretending to be batman. In the end it’s all in good fun and part of the pageantry that is costume play.

But it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, or in this case, can’t physically remove their costume.

According to Comic Book Resources, the foremost authority in people who can’t remove Continue reading “Man Cosplays As Hulk, Can’t Remove Green Ink” »

Say what you will about Wolverine’s last Origins movie, I’m psyched as hell for the new one and its Japan-based, Frank Miller-inspired storyline, even if a lot of it is being shot in, uh, Australia.

I bet this guy was too — his Wolverine outfit looks pretty damn close to the original, and even the guy’s face doesn’t look too far off from Hugh Jackman himself (even if he is a bit older).

But when calls and drop-by visits to the X-Men cosplayer/renowned karate instructor went unanswered for days, cops broke down the door of Continue reading “Wolverine Cosplayer Dies in Weird Sex-Game Accident” »

Never heard of Adam Warren’s Empowered, a manga-style comic book about some hot chick who gets all of her powers via a really tight blue latex bodysuit? Neither have we, but it sounds pretty interesting: the premise of it is that each time a part of her suit is damaged, she loses a bit of her power. Which means that, yes, the enemy’s goal revolves partly around shooting her clothes off, and then killing her.

The only thing that would be better than reading the comic would be actually seeing it in real life.

The heroine of the story is a girl named Emp, and, as GeeksAreSexy points out Continue reading “Hot Cosplay Chick Pays Tribute by…Ripping Off Her Costume (NSFW)” »

It’s pretty rare that we’ll feature any male cosplayers on here, but damn if this guy didn’t build the motherf*ckin’ sweetest Iron Man Mark 7 suit.

According to ObviousWinner forum, this costume is actually getting some hate, but really, we’re hard pressed to find a lot wrong with it.

This may be the next closest thing to the one that Downey Jr. wears in the movies – or even better: most of the movie version’s pop-up and motorized gadgets were probably done in After Effects/Houdini/whatever anyways. If there’s a song I thought I’d see a would-be stripper pole dance to, it was probably something out of any video game. But now it’s kind of cool to be a nerd/geek again, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this girl, courtesy of Geekologie, took it upon herself to do some freestyle pole-lympics to Portal 2′s “Now I Only Want You Gone” theme.

Unfortunately us guys will have to settle for a sports bra and some admittedly un-sexy underpants. That said, however, everything else is in pretty tip-top shape. Vertical, horizontal, upside down, whatever the names of those moves are, she looks great doing them. I’m pretty sure Continue reading “Hot or Not: Girl Pole Dances to Portal 2” »

We continue our coverage of all things Copsplay, featuring Candy Keane this week. Her name might sound familiar, not simply because it bears a striking resemblance to the holiday treat, but because she’s runs Three Muses Clothing, one of the biggest outlets for cosplayers in the U.S.

What is it about cosplaying that is so unique? Does she use her skills to help fans who’d love to cosplay, but have no idea how to construct a costume (i.e. most guys)?

We asked Candy all this and more:

It seems you’ve cosplayed a lot of characters…which one usually gets the best response from fans?

Classic Wonder Woman is the all-time crowd pleaser. Easily recognizable with a fan base that spans every age. The biggest response always Continue reading “‘Wonder Woman’ Candy Keane Shows Us Her Cosplay” »
