With tablets quickly taking over the PC market, one 12 year old from California is thinking about the bigger picture, literally. While the average size of a tablet’s display typically ranges from 5- to 10-inches, tech fanatic James Hardman is taking the tablet game up a notch with a 17-inch Windows-powered tab he plans on manufacturing.
With a goal of $50,000 in funding, Hardman turned to Kickstarter to realize his dreams and posted his plans for the 17-inch super tablet. Oh, and according to him, the device is 5.1x as powerful as iPad 2.
James spoke to Mashable regarding his overarching motivation behind the project.
“I personally love bigger screens,” says the 12 year old Hardman, “And I know other people did, too. I looked everywhere and nobody had anything Continue reading “12-Year Old Building 17-inch Windows Tablet On Kickstarter” »

Does your significant other get on your case about playing Skyrim for 13 hours straight? According to a new study from Brigham Young University, if you plan on having a happy marriage, they should probably start playing games with you. But is it really the videogames causing marital issues?
According to BYU news, the study claimed 75 percent of online gamers’ spouses wished they would spend more time working on the marriage and less time gaming. The researchers specifically focused on online RPGs like WoW when surveying approximately 349 couples nationwide for the study. Recreation management professor Neil Lundberg explained his findings Continue reading “Study: Online Gaming Hurts Marriages, But Gaming Together Increases Satisfaction” »

With all the crap people have been giving Nintendo this year, a sliver of silver lining emerged yesterday with some hopeful economic news: Nintendo’s 3DS sales have all but broken every console sales record in Europe.
This means a total of over 15 million units of the hand held system in about 3 months were sold, solidifying 3DS’ status as Nintendo’s best-selling gaming system on the continent.
GamrConnect reports games like Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7 are two big reasons why the system is selling Continue reading “Nintendo’s Silver Lining: The 3DS Kicks A$$ All Over Europe” »

Would you believe me if I told you Google was working on glasses, similar in look to a pair of Oakleys, but more akin to the Terminator glasses with a HUD and built-in operating system? According to a new report, they are not only real, but Google might soon be launching a beta-pilot program to test the glasses (Google Goggles?) outside of its locked down facilities.
The report comes from our friends over at 9to5Google who cite a reliable source that has actually seen a prototype of the glasses. Here’s what we know so far… Continue reading “Google Working On Terminator-Style Glasses With HUD & Smartphone Specs Built-In” »

When we hear a story of gamers being injured or even passing away while playing games, we’re always skeptical that gaming itself contributed and it wasn’t just the person’s poor judgement or pre-existing medical condition. Today isn’t the first time that we’ve heard of a man dying in a packed Asian internet/gaming cafe while on an extended MMO session, but this time it took nine hours before anyone even noticed…
The original report comes from Sky News (via The Escapist):
The body of Chen Rong-yu, 23, was found slumped in a chair at a cafe in New Taipei city on Tuesday night, according to local reports. He was rigid Continue reading “Taipei Man Dies Playing League of Legends, No One Notices” »

Following its most recent acquisition of Dixons’ and PC World’s John Browett as its new Retail SVP, Apple has poached an Xbox Live marketing exec from Europe to help promote the App Store. In case you were wondering how focused Apple is on further dominating the mobile gaming market in the months to come, its no coincidence they’ve decided to hire someone with 7 years of experience at Xbox…
With Apple rumored to be entering the living room with an HDTV possibly sometime this year, the hiring of Xbox’s Robin Burrowes shouldn’t be understated. Most recently Burrowes worked to market the latest Xbox dashboard updates in the EMEA. Continue reading “Apple Steals Xbox Live Exec To Work On Promoting App Store” »

Sony today announced (via The New York Times) a new CEO to replace Howard Stringer, and it just so happens to be a gamer, Kazuo Hirai– former president of Sony’s consumer electronics group and an important figure in the rise of PlayStation and Sony’s online and gaming efforts.
Prior to overseeing the development of Vita and most other Sony consumer electronic goods, he was also in charge of SCEI & Sony Online Entertainment, the VAIO group, and the online distribution of music, video, books and other content. With Sony working hard to integrate its suite of PSN content with its hardware business, Mr. Hirai’s experience might be exactly what the company needs to turn around from four straight years of losses. This is what Hirai had to say in a statement earlier today: Continue reading “Sony Appoints New President & CEO, And He’s A Gamer” »

This isn’t the first time that PC case and accessory maker Thermaltake and BMW subsidiary Designworks USA have teamed up on a new product designed specifically for gamers. The new Level 10 M gaming mouse announced by the two companies today is an unconventional design created with the pro gamer in mind. “I had (made the move) countless times before, but on those occasions the wheel in my hands had been a white plastic controller,” writes Sally Adee, on how exactly the phenomenon known as GTP helped her in a particularly nasty scenario. “I had been saved by Mario Kart.”
While such a reality-bending experience sounds like something out of The Matrix or Videodrome, a similar scenario may no longer be as far-fetched as one would think. Continue reading “What is ‘GTP’? How Your Gaming Skills Could Save Your Life” »

I guess there was only one thing Will Wright hadn’t done in his Sims series, and that is to make life (from beginning to end) into a virtual game. HiveMind is Wright’s concept of taking a real life player’s personal habits, attitudes and situations, and having them determine the steps and routes you travel in the game.
In other words: how much money do you have in your Chase/WF/credit union account now? That’s going to factor into your avatar’s direction in the game, of course. What kind of job do you have? Again, this will help determine your fate. In a way, the real you becomes a virtual Sim.
As the man behind it all himself says: Continue reading “Sims Creator Will Wright Turns Your Life into a Game with ‘HiveMind’” »

While the majority of us are awaiting the next big product unveiling from companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Sony with high hopes, we often forget about some of the disastrous product unveilings, prototypes, and concepts that never quite took off. This holiday weekend, be thankful that some of these remarkably bad product designs didn’t get the chance to impact the direction of the industry.
Some might have had potential but were commercial failures for good reason, while others were just downright bad decisions. Thankfully, some were premature concepts that acted as stepping stones to better products, and on that note, we start things out with the tablets… Continue reading “The Top 5 Gadgets We Should Be Thankful NEVER happened” »

With the entire gaming industry experimenting with new subscription and payment models, some of which are doing better than others, it’s not much of a surprise that Apple too is considering new methods of monetizing gameplay on their platforms.
In addition to creating an entirely new standard of mobile gaming with the iOS platform and App Store, they have contributed to micro transactions with in-app purchases, and created a new price bracket for high-quality, downloadable games.
But now Apple is once again leading the way, at least in mobile, by allowing publishers to offer subscription based gaming services to iPad users. Bloomberg explains: Continue reading “Apple Allows “Netflix-Like Streaming” of Games to iPad” »

Say what you want about how much better games on Vita will be compared to Apple’s iOS devices, but come this holiday season, the majority of kids will be asking for an iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone.
In fact, according to recent research conducted by Nielson, those three devices beat out all of Nintendo’s, Sony’s, and Microsoft’s gaming platforms as the three most desired consumer electronic products.
While the numbers in the graphic below, which shows the products Continue reading “iOS Devices Beat Out PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox For New Generation of Gamers” »

So it would seem the whole bloody raccoon Mario campaign was just a joke. Or, as PETA officially referred to it today, a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ reaction to the release of Super Mario 3-D.
Could it be the people who sued Sea World for making Shamu their slave and gave us grotesque pictures of Mario eating the body of a raccoon, actually possess a sense of humor?
According to PETA media coordinator Shakira Croce Continue reading “PETA: Only Half As Crazy As They Seem” »

Buzz is starting to build around the new XBOX 720…and by buzz I mean the team has already created a Facebook page and there’s a mock-up of what the logo could look like. But now this news from IGN demonstrates the 720 will most likely be equipped to battle future competition in the cloud gaming market, with OnLive and other competitors expected to enter the fold.
Xbox Live began cloud saves back in June, what is one of their first iterations into the future of cloud storage. But it’s widely believed a complete overhaul into cloud Continue reading “Analysts Expect “XBOX 720″ Will Be a Cloud-Hybrid” »

In anticipation of the London Games Conference kicking off November 10th, Intent Media conducted a survey (via MCV) that asked more than 1,000 industry executives which products and people have had the biggest impact on video games. With results that are likely to anger and puzzle the core gaming community, the study has found Apple and Steve Jobs as the most influential.
Some of the other names that topped the votes are a little less surprising. Jobs was able to beat out gaming industry heavyweights Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve, and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. He even topped Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, and inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee. 46% of participants puts Jobs in their top five Continue reading “Steve Jobs and Apple Voted to Have “Biggest Impact in Shaping The Video Game Industry”” »
