This morning, at about 9:20 AM in the Ursa Mountains in Russia (10:20PM EST in the United States), a Meteor blasted through Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over the Ursa mountains, travelling at 54,000 kilometers/Hour and shattering into pieces about 30-50 kilometers over the ground. The blast shattered windows and glass all across the region, even collapsing the roof of a zinc factory as it laid waste to the area. urlWhen Halo 4 was released last October, gamers were faced with a unique experience within the first few minutes of the game’s campaign: After the Chief wakes up from cryosleep, he climbs up a broken elevator shaft and comes face to face with an enemy he hasn’t fought since midway through Halo 2 — an Elite.

It’s a moment that’s supposed to be a return to form for Halo, the monstrous snake-head shoved in the player’s face, almost a grotesque “Welcome back!” to a universe filled with giant spectral rings, glassed planets, and monsters shouting “wort wort wort.” Continue reading “Will The War Ever End? Screen Shot 2013-01-21 at 1.53.22 PMBungie has sent out a special care package of Halo goodies to a sick child while he is recovering from a liver transplant (via Joystiq).

The child’s father recently took to Reddit in order to seek help getting in touch with Bungie to find a way to cheer his son, and avid Halo fan, up through his “bumpy” recovery process.

Some two weeks ago the child’s father, known as fiscal_ on Reddit, reached out to the Halo subreddit (r/Halo), asking for contact info and help getting in touch with Bungie.

It’s another predictably awesome nerd ditty courtesy of the same minds who brought us the parody of One Direction’s song “What Makes You Beautiful,”  here parodying The Wanted’s “Glad You Came”. Continue reading “The Warp Zone is Glad You Came, Master Chief” »

Since we usually venture more towards either nerdcore or chiptunes, we thought we’d put another group of musicians in the spotlight, especially just because they’re too often overlooked.

Sure, there are guys like Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage) Martin O”Donnell (Halo 2/3) and Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid games), whom are hailed as industry giants, but for a multi billion-dollar industry you ‘d think video game composers would have earned more respect (how long have The Grammys had a ‘Comedy’ category?). Time for another look at the historic landmarks from the past as we reflect on them in the present day… or something like that.

On September 24, 1993, Myst launched, instantly pulling in a generation of PC gamers.  The game remained the best-selling PC game ever for almost a decade when it was finally topped by the Sims.

On September 25, 2007, Halo 3 hit the XBox 360.  The game still has a heavy following today. Continue reading “This Week in Gaming History: The Mysts of Halos, Castles, Commanders and Sixty-Fouuuuur!” »

When you think Halo, unless there’s a disconnect, chances are you don’t also think ‘boy bands’ and ‘the beach’ — at least, not all at the same time. Yep, two of those clearly don’t belong, but this didn’t stop comedy/parody group WarpZone from marrying all 3 to give us the hideously deranged mutant offspring of N’Sync, Master Chief, and Baywatch.

WarpZone’s parody of the One Direction song “What Makes Your Beautiful” manages to both praise the game that unites them, as well as proclaim love for all things late-90s boy band (which we can thank New Direction for I guess) — and it’s all this that makes it seem all the more psychotic. BBC recently issued an apology after a report on the intense situation in Syria featured a UNSC logo from Halo. According to Gametrailers, the logo was apparently mistaken with an official UN logo by the obviously confused staff at BBC.

The report on the conflict in Syria featured the incorrect image on the displays behind the reporter. They apparently got mixed up between the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations Space Command from Halo. Today we get a look at the first Halo 4 pre order bonuses from Canadian retailer EBGames (via AllGamesBeta). The preorder bonuses include a Battle Rifle Skin and an Armor Suit Skin.

At this time the EBGames website says that the Battle Rifle Skin is an EBGames exclusive, which means it will most likely end up as a preorder bonus at its parent company, Gamestop. The Armor Suit Skin is not labeled as an EBGames exclusive, so it is unclear as to where in the U.S and elsewhere it will be available.

Firstly, preorders will land players the Arctic Battle Rifle Weapon Skin (seen below on the BR85 Heavy-Barrel Service Rifle). “Show off in Halo Infinity Continue reading “First Halo 4 Preorder Bonuses” »

it’s no secret that Hollywood loves turning established franchises into films – little risk, lots of $$$. The most recent example of this would be Battleship, the adaptation of – yes – a board game.

The fact that big studios have a seemingly inseparable relationship with big brands, its almost incomprehensible what is happening with the movie adaptation of Halo – one of the most successful video game franchises ever!

In 2006, Fox and Universal allegedly killed what would have been Peter Jacksons and Neill Blomkamps version of Halo Continue reading “Your Move, Hollywood….’Helljumper’ Raises The Bar For Halo Adaptations” »

Who wasn’t sold on the idea ofLord of the Rings director producing the adaptation of what is arguably the most beloved science fiction game of all time?

As the latest in a series of seriously impressive fan-made films, Helljumper looks like it may be the only online series Spartans need.

I was going to suggest that Jackson try and just team up with director Dan Wang and the rest of the guys who made this; focus on the story and let everything naturally come together.

There’s already a story in the “Helljumper” online series, based on Tobias S. Buckell’s “Dirt.” Buckell is already a critical and fan favorite, leaving some to say this might be just as good as whatever Jackson could have come up with (maybe he should just stay focused on his Hobbit prequels?)

The trailer for Helljumper centers on the plot and synopsis of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. It takes place in 2552, just after Continue reading “Is ‘Halo: Helljumper’ Better Than What Peter Jackson Could Have Put Together?” »

If you haven’t had enough video game music, video game concerts, live symphonic versions of Zelda/Mario/Castlevania, Super Mario: The Opera, we have some good news for ya. What is largely regarded as the most well-respected orchestra in the world, The London Philharmonic, is recording some of the best video game soundtracks of all-time for an album ingeniously titled, yes, Video Game Music.

Available starting November 8th, both digitally and in stores, the Philharmonic’s latest will focus mainly on new school vgm, though there will be some older titles (Mario, Tetris) in there as well. This weekend’s PAX wasn’t just home to the biggest geek convention this side of Coruscant, it was also home to Halofest, where Microsoft and 343 Industries revealed bits and pieces about the upcoming trilogy.

Here’s what we know:

First: Fozra 4 players will get to check out the new Warthog design in the upcoming game–they won’t be able to use it as a vehicle (huh?) But for those who can’t wait, check out the pic posted above—that’s your new warthog.

Second: This time it’s all about the Chief. But we heard THAT already. But Frank O’Connor did state that the game would focus more on the actual character of the Master Chief–which may be an enigma to some gamers but hardcore Halo fans* will know that our boy John got a fleshed out Continue reading “Halo 4 Details slip out of PAX!” »
