You’re most likely familiar with the iCade arcade cabinet for iPad. We even told you about new models (including a mobile iPhone version) that were introduced at CES. Today ThinkGeek has given us a sneak peek at the latest iCADE peripheral– a classic Nintendo-style controller for iPhone and iPad (and Android) decked out in 8-bit motifs and branded the “8-bitty”.

The controller sports 8 buttons: 4 face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and select and start (and the D-Pad, of course). It pairs wirelessly over Bluetooth (two AAA batteries required) and supports all iCADE compatible games including Pac Man, Super Mega Worm, and the Atari Classics collection (complete list here). The good news is devs (even Android) can easily add support to their apps, so the list keeps Continue reading “iCADE 8-Bitty Controller For iPhone And iPad, Coming Soon For $25” »

Following the NES controller concept for iPhone that we showed you last week, a new mod discovered by blogger Paul Rickards allows you to use an actual NES controller with your iPad over USB.

In a post over at biosrhythm, Rickards explains that the discovery was the result of an accident while using the C64 homebrew keyboard he modded to work with his iPad using Apple’s Camera Connection Kit. Rickards explains the process (via TouchArcade): Continue reading “Mod Brings NES Controller Support To iCade-Supported iPad Games” »

building iphone modTo fully embrace the spirit of CES this week, modder Ben Heck– who is mostly known for his Xbox 360 laptop, Atari, and Nintendo mods– has decided to create one of his small form factor controller mods for the iPhone.

To accomplish the task Ben took the popular iCade arcade cabinet accessory for iPad and used its circuitry to create a handheld version that cradles the iPhone and resembles a PSP. Here’s how he did it:

To successfully implement video gaming capabilities onto the smaller-footed iPhone, Ben first deconstructs an iCade®system that enables gaming on an Apple iPad® to integrate a scaled-down version of the circuitry. Then, by connecting a PodBreakout board to a simulated battery, Ben borrows voltage from the iPad to enable the Bluetooth required to power the iPhone for mobile gaming purposes.

Ben will be showing off the mod with GT.TV host Geoff Keighley on Spike at CES on Tuesday, Jan 10 at 2:15 pm PST. Continue reading “iPhone Gets Unofficial iCade Handheld Mod as Official Mobile Version Gets Unveiled” »

Up until now only Android users have had the pleasure of using the Gametel bluetooth controller from accessory maker Fructel. The device clips onto your smartphone and provides a classic D-pad/joystick hybrid on the left, “Select” and “Start” in the middle”, four game buttons on the right, and two shoulder buttons that sit behind the smartphone.

Fructel recently announced (via GSMArena) a couple days early that an iOS version of Gametel will indeed be launching at CES.

iPhones, iPads, and iPods running iOS 4.0 Continue reading “Gametel bluetooth controller for iOS to launch at CES 2012” »
