The concept of the live action trailer for video games is weirdly fascinating to me. Over the last two weeks, Bethesda, Activision and 2K all announced their new titles not with a demonstration of the actual game, but with live action trailers–content designed to replicate cinema instead of games, but usually marketing games which mimic closely cinema or other art forms to begin with. The fact that they blur the lines between game and cinema, sometimes knocking it out of the park with experiences that expand of the fiction of the game, make them a cool thing to study while talking about the experience of being a gamer. As many of you probably heard on Friday, the live-action Robotech is officially back on again, with Warner Bros. now actively pursuing their adaptation of the classic anime (no surprise, since Akira is again D.O.A.)
It still seems too good to be true: in 2007, Tobey Maguire announced some company he was in control of was set to produce the thing. Over time fans probably lost steam; directors kept dropping in and out of the project, Tobey got distracted with other stuff, et.al. Not much of a surprise; if Leonardo DiCaprio couldn’t get it done with Akira, what chance did Macross have? Mamoru Oshii, acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor, arguably two of the most beloved films in the canon of anime, has been given the task of directing his first feature length live-action Hollywood film.
Rumors immediately abounded as to what it could be: a live-action adaptation of a beloved comic book franchise? A remake of a beloved cult film?
Unfortunately, no one seems to have any idea who/what else is involved beyond the the film’s tentative title: The Last Druid: The Garm Wars. Continue reading “Daily Anime: ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Director to Helm 1st Live-Action Hollywood Film” »

Behind the scenes video of the cast and crew from the Live-Action film Rurouni Kenshin hit the web today, profiling director Keishi Ōtomo as he works with the cast and crew.
The video runs around 17 minutes, and features some excellent sneak peaks at the film’s action scenes. The film is the live action tribute to the enormously popular manga turned anime, which according to the Rurouni Kenshin wikipedia page, is slated to come out this Friday in Japan (and however else Anime fans decide to watch it).
Rurouni Kenshin was released as a manga in 1994, and began as an anime in 1996 Continue reading “Live-Action Rurouni Kenshin Previews Behind The Scenes Footage, Film Releases August 25th” »

It’s been a while since we reported on anything Marvel-to-anime, and once again Wolverine is pwning all the headlines. While you probably either love or hate the Japanimation-ification of what many consider Marvel’s most prized hero, the DVD release of the relatively celebrated/somewhat controversial adaptation officially drops next week — around the same time the live-action movie starts shooting.
Courtesy of ScienceFiction.com there’s a few clips that have already been released in anticipation of its release.
Here’s a trailer for the DVD, which features the Continue reading “DAILY ANIME: Warren Ellis Talks Wolverine Japanimation, Hugh Jackman’s ‘Origins’ Sequel Goes Into Production” »

After recently catching a couple old interviews with Dave Chappelle, where he detailed what j*rkoffs the CC execs were (hey, did you guys hear? TV execs are kinda d*cks!) — naturally it’s kind of hard not to hate on a network after hearing about how they treat their creative talent. But then they (and by ‘they’ I mean their creative talent) go and does stuff like this, proving where the real brains are anyways.
In this case, it’s a completely live-action, re-creation of the Futurama introduction, made entirely by hand (and ‘tentacle’, according to the disclaimer). Continue reading “Watch a Kick-A$$ Live-Action Version of The ‘Futurama’ Introduction” »

We reported recently regarding the rumors surrounding the new Ubisoft IP, Watchdogs, possibly being made into a movie, and today we get word about a possible Mortal Kombat film in the works.
Bloody-disgusting.com (via Gameinformer) claims that a new live-action Mortal Kombat reboot is in development after “Making a few phone calls and doing quite a bit of digging”. While you might be sick of hearing about Michael Bay and all the TMNT sh*t as of late, we can’t get enough of it. At least as long as it’s stuff like Pac Man: The Movie (which is really just a fan film for the actual, as-of-now unrealized feature-length).
Though somebody came up with the Bay reference already, after watching it there’s really no better director it could be compared to. Or maybe Roland Emmerich, crossed with the media-conscious filmmaking of Paul Verhoeven?
Let’s see: Continue reading “Pac-Man, The Movie: The Michael Bay/Roland Emmerich Version” »

C’mon, you can’t get enough — the adaptation of Akira is generating more hate and controversy than any other cartoon-to-live action adaptation ever.
But it’s more than just another live action anime adoption, it’s arguably the most beloved of all-time. So before you abandon all hope — and after all the back and forth on this subject, who wouldn’t (sorry, we’re not really helping), we might surprise you with this news: there actually might be a silver lining. That tiny, threadbare string being that Jonathan Nolan, the brains behind “Following”, “Memento”, and of course The Dark Knight franchise, is being eyed to re-write the script. As Variety reports: Continue reading “TETSUOOOO! ‘Akira’ Resurrects, Looks to Recruit ‘Dark Knight’ Scribe” »

Not much has been heard about the rumored live-action Voltron movie ever since these stunning concept photos were released. Its status on IMBD status is pretty much non-existent, with no release date or cast/crew yet attached, and as-yet-unconfirmed news that Justin Marks’ script has been pulled due to rights reversion.
Fortunately this Voltron live-action short, featured this week on Tor, paints a picture of what a final product could one day look like.
“The End” is an unabashedly hopeless vision Continue reading “‘Voltron’ Fan-Made Short is The Stuff Feature-Length Movies Are Made Of” »

Does anyone else remember seeing the Ranma 1/2 manga in comic book stores as a wee lad/lass? It began its run in the mid-80s and soon developed a huge cult following that loved it for its giant pandas and transvestites that changed sexes when it rained (one of the first manga comics to feature at least one transvestite as a main character.)
And yet several years after maintaining a Continue reading “Legendary Anime ‘Ranma 1/2′ Gets Live-Action Television Special” »

Back in 2008, Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the second-best anime/manga of all time, and many Ghost in the Shell fans around the world did their best to forget about Spielberg’s version of A.I. and focus more on Minority Report and Close Encounters and the like.
With noted Marvel producer, the ambitious Avi Arad behind it all, chances were less likely that it would be so stalled. But like a lot of other anime-to-live action projects, that’s exactly what happened – until the project resurfaced again in 2009, when it was reported that Shutter Island (YES!) and Alexander (hmmm) writer Laeta Kalogridis was on board, and that – duh – Major Kusinagi would be the main character.

…and NOT make the movie adaptation?
As author Luke Punkett deftly pointed out in his column this week, Akira is one of the most beloved anime sci-fi films of all time – yet its translation to the gaming realm was pretty pathetic. Continue reading “Should Hollywood Take a Cue from the Game Adaptations of Akira…” »
