The online project-funding site Kickstarter has been in a lot of headlines as of late. First we told you about two Kickstarter projects that reached 1 million dollars in funding, and just today a 17-inch Windows tablet being built by a 12-year old. However, an interesting new take on game development (via The Verge) is definitely something that has our attention. Rather than just an online course, “Code Hero” aims to teach you how to build games through a first-person videogame.
Alex Peake and Primer Labs have come up with the innovative and intuitive way to learn how to code games and hope you’re interested in making their plans come to reality. Built on the Unity 3D Engine, Code Hero uses a series of missions and, for the most part, familiar mechanics to both teach the player about coding and allow them to build their own Untiy games while playing. Apple today introduced a developer preview of its next major operating system for Macs called OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. While the “Mountain Lion” moniker follows on with Apple’s tradition of naming OS releases after cats, one big change to the name is the omission of “Mac”. Apple is dropping the “Mac” from “Mac OS X”, a big change for the operating system that has used “Mac OS” as its identify for 10+ years.
The move is parter of a larger change for Apple and OS X that sees the entire operating system merging with the work done on the iOS operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Mountain Lion incorporates many features that Continue reading “Apple Drops “Mac” With Mountain Lion Preview, Begins Merging Of iOS and OS X” »

We all know that Nintendo is doing everything they can to distance their franchises from iOS devices, despite just about every other gaming company developing and porting titles to iPhone and iPad. One developer calling themselves “NER Brothers” has taken things into their own hands and released “Super Jump World”, an obvious rip-off of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros franchise for iOS and Mac OS X.
The good news is it’s actually a half decent game, and probably the closest you’ll get to a mario game on your iPhone Continue reading “‘Super Jump World’ by ‘NER Brothers’ is a Super Nintendo Rip-Off for iOS” »

Right on the heels of Google announcing 10 billion downloads in the Android Market, Apple has today shared some numbers announcing impressive stats for the App Store and Mac App Store.
Apple has officially announced the App Store on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is home to over 500,000 apps with more than 18 billion app downloads since the store’s launch.
Currently, an average of about 1 billion apps are being downloaded per month. It looks like I will no longer have to write these articles with my hands, as the new Dragon Express app from voice recognition experts Nuance is an inexpensive option for quality speech-to-text functionality on a Mac.
Well, it’s inexpensive at least in comparison to Nuance’s well-established Dragon Dictate software. The new app is essentially a lightweight version of the full $199 Dragon Dictate app, and provides the majority of features the average user will require.
So how does it work? After you’ve installed the app from the Mac App Store, it will exist within your menubar at the top of your screen. You can launch Continue reading “Nuance speech-to-text comes to Mac OS X on the cheap with Dragon Express app” »

Growl, best known as an OS X notification system compatible with a ton of apps and aiming to be a sort of customizable, system-wide notification system in many ways, has just received a huge update. Version 1.3 not only includes a ton of new features, it’s also the first time Growl will be available exclusively in the Mac App Store.
What can you expect from the new version? The developers have completely rewritten Growl and, for starters, created a entirely redesigned UI that lets you access everything from a menubar icon. A new preference pane also lets you easily search through your full notifications history, tweak your preferences, and apply themes. We all know that Batman: Arkham Asylum, originally released almost two years back on Xbox, PS3, and PC, received critical acclaim and was arguably one of the better games of the year. Now Mac users can soon get the experience natively on OS X (without running Windows on BootCamp or OnLive) as Feral Interactive plans on launching the title via the Mac App Store on October 13. Adobe is definitely not joking about making tools available to iOS developers with the recent release of a new PDF creation app and a web design tool for iPad and iPhone.
The company announced a new app called Carousel that will allow you to store, edit, and access your photo collection in the cloud. Of course we aren’t sure if this stands a chance against Apple’s forthcoming iCloud photo services (especially as native editing features on iOS mature), but it’s interesting nonetheless.
