Rumors have been surfacing all over the internet lately that the next Xbox will require players to be connected to the internet at all times, something that has many gamers and critics concerned. Although there may not be anything inherently bad about always online experiences, the idea that the console itself must be, presents a number of different problems as I’m sure you can imagine.
For one there are many different regions of the world where broadband internet connections aren’t reliable. We are talking about both more remote regions as well fully developed city centers. Even parts of major cities like New York and Los Angeles experience random internet black-outs with no forewarning.

If you’ve caught wind of all the rumors swirling around the new Xbox, you may have heard some unpleasant ones (depending on your gaming dependency or lack thereof).
Among the most unsavory of them is that the XBox 720 will not be able to play used games. Recently Internet word-of-mouth has indicated that indeed this could be the case, despite no official word from Microsoft. What would happen to GameStop in such a case? Funny you should ask: they may very well be utterly and totally screwed. Continue reading “GameStop is Freaking Out Over The New Xbox — And With Good Reason” »

We reported this morning about an interview with Sony CEO Kaz Hirai that ran in The Times. He mentioned that Sony would be letting Microsoft make the first move and now we have supposed next gen Xbox specs from VGleaks.com.
At this point there is no official word on this rumor but as Eurogamer points out, the data mentioned in today’s leak matches up quite closely to other information that the outlet has received from what it calls “trusted sources.” Apparently today’s leaker has also provided proof of the source of the data, of which Eurogamer said “appears to be genuine.” Continue reading “Next-Gen Xbox Specs Leaked (Actually Appears To Be Somewhat Trustworthy)” »

According to a recent blog on their website, Microsoft is busy finishing the building of its newest Data Center, a 200 KW facility in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Using methane collected from a raw sewage plant in a nearby creek, it will be powered (pretty much) completely by human waste. While this may sound unusual to some, Continue reading “Microsoft’s Latest Facility To Be Powered By Human Waste” »

Microsoft plans to launch an Xbox set-top box as a lower cost alternative to the full Xbox console. According to The Verge, multiple sources familiar with Microsoft’s future intentions have confirmed the device.
With Microsoft’s obvious attempt to begin taking over the living room, the new set-top box will bring core entertainment services and allow users to choose between the stripped down set-top box or a full next-gen Xbox. The reports are claiming that the new set-top box will bring casual gaming to the living room as opposed to full on next-gen Xbox titles and is part of a two-SKU plan Microsoft will be unveiling come 2013.

Late last night a tweet from Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb hinted that the company plans on “celebrating” in some way with users that have been with Xbox Live since it was first introduced. At that time no other details were known until images of a special edition 10th anniversary Xbox 360 starting appearing online.
Kotaku received images of the special edition console from a reader. Apparently the reader’s friend received the console in the mail inside a box designed with Xbox Live 10th Birthday graphics, “Xbox Live, a decade of entertainment” ( below).

Microsoft is reporting a huge increase in the sales of their latest edition of Windows.
According to RocketNews 24, Microsoft CEO Chief Executive Steve Ballmer reported that Windows 8 has been selling at a much faster rate than Windows 7, which up until Friday, was Microsoft’s best-selling Windows version to date. There also might be a pretty simple reason behind it all. Continue reading “Cute Manga Chicks Give Huge Boost to Windows 8 Sales” »

Microsoft is expanding its subsidized Xbox 360 options to include more console models and retail outlets.
Although many were skeptical when the first $99 Xbox hit back in May, it must have been successful for the tech giant to end up choosing to expand the program.
Previously we reported to you about the 4GB Xbox 360 that came available for just $99 but with a hint of caution, being that mathematically the number didn’t really end up saving you any money. If you are interested in the numbers you can can go over the price break down here in our previous story. Continue reading “Daily Gaming: New Subsidized Xbox Pricing, Starting at $99” »

We previously reported to you about Microsoft launching its new online store that will include everything from movies and TV to music and games. Unfortunately, according to Forbes, Microsoft will not be allowing any mature rated games on its new service either in North America or Europe.
Titles with a rating any higher than 16+ PEGI will not be sold or supported. In the U.S Microsoft will not be supporting any games rated mature. This is both bothersome and mildly confusing being that Microsoft not only supports and sells M-rated content through Xbox 360 it is also a major game publisher for some pretty serious violent and otherwise mature titles.

Microsoft updated the Kinect for Windows runtime and software development kit with a number of new features today. Microsoft has decided to branch Kinect out for motion recognition in non-gaming applications (via CNET). Microsoft also announced today that Kinect for Windows is now available in China.
This new update will allow developers to tap into the device much deeper than ever before. The SDK update will allow access to data from the sensor’s accelerometer as well as the use of an infrared stream among other things.
Although much of the improvements are seemingly for non-gaming applications it is possible that game developers will be able to make use of the deeper data set. Continue reading “Daily Tech: Microsoft Launches Improved Kinect for Windows SDK” »

Lately there has been a lot of unhappy developers expressing their feelings on Windows 8. Everyone from Gabe Newell, to some of the Blizzard executives and now the creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, have all come down pretty hard on the new Microsoft OS.
Microsoft requires a sort of certification process that Persson is not happy about. Notch said that he would rather “have Minecraft not run on [Windows 8] at all than to play along“ with Microsoft. He feels that this certification process is ruining the platform for indie developers.

A new Microsoft job listing says we will be seeing the next-gen Xbox within a year and half. According to IDG a recent and now deleted job posting on the Microsoft Careers Website accidentally leaked information on upcoming Microsoft products, including a new Xbox, with release dates in the next 18 months.
It is still unclear and certainly unofficial as to whether or not the listing was referring to a hardware upgrade or just a software update for the Xbox 360.
