The National Rifle Association is blaming violent entertainment as the cause of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Both in a statement the NRA released this morning on its official website and in a press conference, the group’s executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said that violent crimes like the one that took place in Newton, Connecticut, are on the rise and “there exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people.”
LaPierre goes on to call out video games as one of these forms of “callous” entertainment. He said “vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse” along with a ten year-old flash game called Kindergarten Killer, “…portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life.”

This week in video game history, we celebrate the anniversary of three of the most iconic video game titles of all time.
On August 6, 1986, Nintendo introduced Metroid for the Famicom Disk System. While not the first female protagonist in video game history, the lead character of Samus Aran was certainly the first time we were surprised by it.
U.S. gamers got their hands on the game for the Nintendo Entertainment System almost exactly one year later.

Fishing around for nerdcore on the ‘net can be a seriously time-wasting experience.
Or, it can result in stumbling upon guys like Surgeon General, who seems to have brought a new edge to the genre. The General is less keen on tongue-in-cheek, nerd-friendly topics (aside from video games in general, we mean) then he is injecting a bit of the gangsta side to what he says — which in this case, is an unabashed love of all things Mortal Kombat: Continue reading “Rapper Surgeon General Makes Nerdcore Hardcore” »

As the viral video “I Play WoW” tributes continues to spiral out of control (and there’s no other way we’d have it), we got hold of a pretty awesome tribute from YouTuber Zach 26505, who lip syncs video game songs.
That’s sort of a misnomer; he actually does a kick-ass job of lip-syncing to video game songs, and did us the great service of syncing to a couple of Jace’s own — in this case, Jace’s Mortal Kombat rap, and of course I Play WoW. In case you are wondering exactly what is inside of Sony’s new PlayStation Vita that isn’t listed on the device’s specs page, the guys and gals at iFixit are at it once again, this time tearing apart the PS Vita right down to the motherboard. At the same time, we get a look at what we can expect to be playing on the device in the near future with the release of a new Mortal Kombat trailer featuring the Vita and a little background music from Skrillex.
If you’re unfamiliar with iFixit’s usual routine, their main goal is to find out how easy and cost efficient our new devices will be to repair. To do that, they have to tear them apart, and in the process we get a look inside the device and learn exactly what we’re dealing with for hardware Sony doesn’t typically disclose. All right, so this is the second video we’ve featured with nutty dancers in Mortal Kombat outfits trapesing around New York City like morons. But as opposed to the n00bs (saibot!) of video # 1, GeeksAreSexy featured video of this kombat krew, who went back to Beat Street for some refresher lessons. Witness, for instance, Scorpion’s bad-ass caterpillar, dancing of a much ballsier variety (i.e. up in everyone’s face, from restaurant patrons to sidewalk Santas), and the fact that there’s a girl who braved New York’s Winter to dress like Mileena (?), even down to the nifty booty shorts.
They even jump on/off a moving port-a-potty truck, gyrate up against an unsuspecting Spongebob and comatose Cookie Monster, and even demonstrate what might be some actual karate moves Continue reading “EPIC Mortal Kombat Flash Dance, Round 2” »

The premise of this video is simple: Mortal Kombat enthusiasts put on a great deal of expensive makeup (some more than others, judging by the Liu Kang), and really go all out to make themselves look like their straight out of the live-action movie.
It comes across as something of a caravan rave party, totaling nearly 9 minutes of Mortal Kombat-goodness, with the best part of all the somewhat lackluster reactions he gets from people (especially the Money Exchange clerk, who observes briefly before turning back Continue reading “Mortal Kombatants’ Halloween Dance Attack (With Mixed Results)” »

Looks like Mortal Kombat’s Raiden is alive and well…and, apparently, living in Indonesia.
Also known (and revered) as the “Magnus of Java”, John Chang is the closest we have a real-life version of the lightning bolt-chucking video game God we’ll ever see. Though if Raiden dressed in scrubs and had a cigarette dangling out of his mouth it probably just wouldn’t have had the same dramatic effect. 6 Million views in under 46 hours and counting….
By the time this article is published, the song could easily be at seven or eight million views…it might even be nine. The only thing for certain is that at the rate of over 2000 views a minute, the Jace Hall Mortal Kombat music video is catching on like crazy. The million dollar question is, who is it catching on to?
First, let’s take a step back and look at who the hip-hop music industry is trying to appeal to. Continue reading “Surprise Hit ‘Mortal Kombat Song’ Changing Shape of Music and Video Game Industry” »
