Seems there’s a lot more to the Wreck-It-Ralph film than Pixar animation and video game characters. Turns out that director Rich Moore filmed another movie — around the same time Ralph was released — that explains the strange story behind it.
The end result is something between Spinal Tap and the classic Donkey Kong documentary, King of Kong, called Garlan Hulse: Where Potential Lives. Continue reading “Director Rich Moore Reveals the Bizarre Story Behind WRECK IT RALPH” »

After the ongoing headache/development hell the Warcraft movie was stuck in with Sam Raimi, Blizzard and Legendary Films have locked in major sci-fi ‘indie’ film director Duncan Jones (also known as David Bowie’s son) to helm the project. Great news? Sorta:
The Hollywood Reporter has insisted that this is an adaptation of the Warcraft franchise, not necessarily World of Warcraft, the Massively Multiplayer Online RPG that still has over 10 million subscribers. Continue reading “Warcraft Film Rises From the Ashes, Has Unexpected Choice for Director” »

It’s rare that Kentucky Fried Chicken ever really does any sort of movie promotions over here in the states. Usually the closest the junk food chain gets is a simple sweepstakes contest, or team-up with Oprah to give away free chicken, which ends in total disastrous calamity.
The last cinema-related thing they did was a tie-in with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which took place at every KFC in the world. Now, most of the company’s marketing geniuses seem focused on Japan, which is where they’ll be using the chain (especially the Colonel) to promote the newest Dragon Ball Z film release. As many of you probably heard on Friday, the live-action Robotech is officially back on again, with Warner Bros. now actively pursuing their adaptation of the classic anime (no surprise, since Akira is again D.O.A.)
It still seems too good to be true: in 2007, Tobey Maguire announced some company he was in control of was set to produce the thing. Over time fans probably lost steam; directors kept dropping in and out of the project, Tobey got distracted with other stuff, et.al. Not much of a surprise; if Leonardo DiCaprio couldn’t get it done with Akira, what chance did Macross have? In the world of comics both cult and mainstream, Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man is arguably amongst the most beloved and critically acclaimed (Stephen King proclaimed it was his favorite comic of all time). It sits on the top 10 list of many a graphic novel fan — and it’s also been languishing in film production hell for a long time.

Variety has announced that Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Warrior, Bronson) has signed on to star in the on-screen adaptation of Ubisoft’s “Splinter Cell.”
This comes in the same month as another Ubisoft title, Assassins Creed, making a move to the big-screen with the announcement that Michael Fassbender will be on board.
While Assassins Creed is being developed as Ubisoft Studios first motion picture, Splinter Cell is currently being shopped around at Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. We do know that TOM HARDY will be playing the role of SAM FISHER, as per an official statement from Ubisoft.
“Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills…His involvement in the ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. ”
Eric Warren Singer (The International, Aeon Flux) has also reportedly signed onto pen the film.
Tom Clancy’s original Splinter Cell has sold over 3 million copies, with the franchise totaling over 23 million copies. The most recent iteration of the franchise, Splinter Cell Blacklist, is expected in the middle of 2013.

When a 2nd big-screen adaptation of The Punisher appeared in 2004, everyone was convinced it had to be better than the 1989 version.
They were mostly right, despite picky fans doing their best to find whatever faults with it they could (most forums blame Travolta and his toupee). Still, it didn’t stop Thomas Jane from doing a Punisher fan film of his own that, by most accounts, redeemed it.
It looks like something similar has happened with another comic — and after a couple years in production hell, Elfquest author/artist Wendy Pini has decided the material’s better off with Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes, two fans who created the pretty stunning ElfQuest: A Fan Imagining short about a year ago. It’s hard to figure out what’s weirder — a)the fact that after 20 years a Castle Wolfenstein movie still hasn’t surfaced, or b) Roger Avary, the Oscar Winner and brains behind Pulp Fiction, is both writing and directing the thing.
Bloody-Disgusting reports that the movie will follow a member of the U.S. army, who’s been teamed up with an MI6 agent to infiltrate Castle Wolfenstein, where Adolf Hitler is supervising the construction of a new kind of secret super-weapon.

Jennifer Zhang wanted to write a film that blended American Slasher with Asian horror films “Ringu” and “Ju-On.” With the help of Director Pearry Teo and a crew of Google investors, that vision came to fruition with ”Dead Inside”, a film that has already picked up Best Directing, Cinematography and Best Narrative awards and recently scored distribution in the UK.
The film features Sarah, a teen with a history of mental illness, who has a premonition of her friends’ impending deaths one night at a sleepover. As her houseguests begin to turn murderously against each other, Sarah must determine whether her visions represent the preventable or the inevitable…or something much, much worse.
Says Jennifer, the film wouldn’t have happened if she didn’t stick to her guns and make Street Fighter High, one of her first original “fan films”: Continue reading “Google Engineers Tell Us How They Made a Horror Movie” »

Behind the scenes video of the cast and crew from the Live-Action film Rurouni Kenshin hit the web today, profiling director Keishi Ōtomo as he works with the cast and crew.
The video runs around 17 minutes, and features some excellent sneak peaks at the film’s action scenes. “But there’s already been a World of Warcraft movie!”
If you aren’t thinking that than you need to check out /afk, a short film that is arguably better than what Sam Raimi and co. would have thrown our way.
How fitting that on the same day that we debut a new I Play WoW music video, this news hits? It’s no secret we’re skeptical whenever we hear a video game is getting adapted to the big screen, almost certainly because it’s marketable but not always because it has a strong foundation for a good film. World of Warcraft would seem to fit snugly into that stigma. Continue reading “DAILY CINEMA: Sam Raimi Out As Director World of Warcraft Movie” »

I can’t think of a better duo of reviewers/hosts to delve into the problems with Prometheus than Red Letter Media, a couple of semi-comatose possibly serial-killing movie goers who may or may not work at Target, to analyze the movie — and do it so well and entertainingly. Lots of the usual questions pop up, and ones I tried my best to ignore, to no avail.
The most obvious ones first:
-Why would the characters respond to potentially hostile and creepy looking alien life by wanting to reach out and PET it?
-While we’re at it, how could such ‘bright’ scientists be so f*cking dumb? Continue reading “The Rant: Let’s Talk About PROMETHEUS, Baby (SPOILERS)” »

Look up any clips for YouTube user Warialasky’s “Tetris”, and the general consensus in forums is that if Hollywood can make a movie out of Battleship, why not make a movie out of something gamers really want to see? It’s evidently something Warialasky was wondering too, and the end results don’t look half-bad.
Considering, of course, that they were fashioned from an assortment of clips: everything from the rad little self-financed film Pixels by Patrick Jean, to Independence Day, to Battle Los Angeles, to be precise. Continue reading “‘Tetris: The Movie’ Has Giant Blocks That Want to Kill You” »

You don’t have to have seen 2001: A Space Odyssey to enjoy the Lego one, because it really really makes no more sense than the Stanley Kubrick version — acid hyperspace trip and homicidal monkeys included.
Spite Your Face Productions‘ version, a one-minute condensed version of the movie called One: A Space Odyssey, focuses on all the best parts — little Lego monkeys playing the drums, running around and screaming at that black monolith; the Starchild (that baby embryo thing) floating in the Continue reading “Epic Science Fiction Win…Now With Legos” »
