One of the geekiest shows on National Public Radio these days might be “Sci-Fridays”, a science and nerd-oriented show hosted by über-geek Ira Flatow.
Regular shows cover everything from artificial intelligence to Holographic Universe Theory — and this week, Ira and co. took a break from the usual strictly science-oriented fare to talk to the godfather of nerdcore himself. Of all the Golden Age NES games that consistently rank among the greatest, Castlevania seems like the most criminally overlooked. While it may seem as though Mario and Luigi, with all their parodies and tributes, may be the most mimicked, Simon Belmont is being honored in 2 different media forms in the same week.
The first is a nerdcore/techno tribute to Konami’s flagship series, courtesy of BLiNd. Then, some aspiring auteurs have made the Castlevania tribute film “Legend of Vania”, which may very well constitute one of the elaborately made LEGO movies ever.

While the spirit of nerdcore music has always been one of friendly disposition and good-natured camaraderie, the second official Vocalist/Producer Challenge (#VPC) looks to bring out the real competitive side of contenders. It’s a chance for nerdcore champs like MC Ohm-I, Beaker Sullivan, Mega Ran, Beefy, just to name a few, to collaborate in assorted vocal/producer team-ups and see which duo does the best. There’s a certain charm to Nerdcore newcomer SkyBlew, a 22 year-old hip-hop artist from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sure, there’s the usual anime and gaming influences, but Sky also credits his grandmother with being a huge inspiration to his art and his music.
“What influenced me was not only her beautiful spirit but everything she stood for…She was always helping people in need.”
Of course that’s not all “Count Super Nintendo as one of the biggest (influences),” says SkyBlew, “because it has my 2 of my FAVORITE games of all time — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time & Super Mario World.” Continue reading “Nerdcore Artist SkyBlew Blends Sonic, SNES, and His Grandmother” »

Just in time for the holidays, Mega Ran is offering a 50% discount on all of his goodies (songs, albums, etc.) all month long — plus some cool links, including one for the Top 5 Mega Man Remixes, as well as one to the Mega Man vs. Street Fighter game.
Random also dished out some nostalgia on the 25th Anniversary of Mega Man for the Mega Man Network, specifically citing that he thinks Mega Man 2 has the best music, but Mega Man 3 poses the best as far as challenges/bosses. Such comments may provoke some controversy, especially given that The Blue Bomber has 10 games to his name already. Back when MC Router was first getting noticed, a nerdcore rapper by the name of Nursehella was already declaring a steadfast love of countless things nerd, as well as being among the first to give female nerdcore emcees a name. She was also louder and angrier than most of her compatriots.
She’s also been lying dormant since 2006 now, carefully plotting her return, intent on following her last EP (which was released to great acclaim) with some truly new and very l33t rhymes on Second Coming, her new full-length. Has the wait been worth it? Continue reading “Nerdcore’s Nursehella Returns After 6 Years With ‘Second Coming’” »

When a band adopts a name like My Parents’ Favorite Music, the last thing you’d probably want to do is listen to them.
But the duo of MC and Steffo, which has endured since 2000, continues to maintain both a steady cult and (relatively) mainstream following — including being featured in Dan Lamoureux’s 2008 documentary “Nerdcore for Life.”
Melding rapid-fire lyrics with a variety of analog/digital percussion and oscillators firing on all five cylinders, MPFM also covers a slew of nerd-friendly topics. Continue reading “My Parents’ Favorite Music: Classic Nerdcore” »

Nerdcore’s subject matter continues to revolve largely around pop culture staples — stuff like video games, manga, scifi/fantasy television/ movies and the like. Richie Branson, for instance, has shown some serious love for anime staples like Mobile Suit Gundam and Toonami, while Sir Darkseid regularly pays tribute to Batman and The Thundercats.
But Freakyy is, by all accounts, the first to try making nerdcore songs out of showtunes. Continue reading “Freakyy Mixes Nerdcore With…Showtunes?” »

Milk Plus refuses to play it safe. He’s found his calling in nerdcore and tried to differentiate himself from the pack — largely by rapping over songs comprised from several different genres — ska and reggae among his obvious favorites.
At other times, MP is content to dabble in a bit of dubstep, as well as a bit of the old fashioned hip-hop beats that made guys like Eazy-E and Spice-1 household names. Continue reading “Milk-Plus Pits His Nerdcore Against the World” »

This video from earlier this year was sent to us, proving the public’s notorious love of gaming and nerdcore isn’t just an American thing; now a group of gaming geeks and nerds in France has produced and directed the video “I’m a Geek”, a celebration of all things gaming and nerdery.
Thus the French accents perhaps/slightly more sexual visuals. But there’s serious devotion to nerdery here, even if it’s more European.
“I’m a Geek” features 3 French ‘nerds’: Loacs, Johntah, and Shayna. Continue reading ““I’m a Geek” Music Video Proves The French May Be Geeks (But That Doesn’t Stop ‘Em From Balling)” »

If you’re familiar in the least with the likes of Matt and Kim and other boy/girl pop duos who’ve won hearts over with their infectious brand of happy, lightly nerdy pop, you might have mixed reactions to Math The Band.
That’s largely because a) Math is this Rhode-Island based math/punk/nerdcore band that’s something like a cross between Black Flag and Bit Shifter (or M83 and Mr. Bungle), and b)they’re pretty much the opposite — in the extreme sense of the word — of every nerdcore and/or chiptunes band you’ve ever heard.
They’re also LOUD, you hear? LOUD. Continue reading “Daily Nerdcore: Math the Band, Most Raucous of All Nerdcore Groups?” »

Given that he’s covered virtually every major manga under the sun — from Mobile Suit Gundam to Death Note — maybe it was only a matter of time before Richard Branson got tired of nerdcore, packed up hi sh*t, and headed out for greener pastures a.k.a.non-nerd hip-hop territory.
Despite the release of his latest single/album preview, “Wrath,” which Branson describes as ‘a preview of what to expect if he ever made it on a mainstream level,’ he also re-affirms that he’s dedicated to nerdcore — Continue reading “Daily Nerdcore: Branson Accepts the Anti-Nerd Challenge; Does PS3 ‘Neon Alley’ Commercial” »

Pick-up lines might have gone out of style with broads around the same time as leisure suits, but that makes no difference to Ohm-I. The loves gaming, sex, and pretty much everything else gaming guys love, and he doesn’t shy away from gaming euphemisms to make his intentions clear. The lyrics of “Nerd You Up”, for instance, make it totally clear what he’s after:
“You can be the Peach to my Mario/
so take a second, grab my controller, sit down, it’s game on, baby.”
Yes, by controller, he means penis, and it’s kinda nice to have someone right off the bat be so up front about what he’s after, while managing to use clever gaming hyperbole like this. Continue reading “Daily Nerdcore: For MC Ohm-I, Gaming’s A Part of the Package” »
