According to a statement this week from the New York City Police Foundation, it is currently developing and testing new technology designed to detect secured weapons from a distance in conjunction with the Defense Department.

A report from the The New York Times said the technology works as a “reverse infrared mapping tool by reading the energy people emit and pinpointing where that flow is blocked by some object, like a gun”. Physics professor John Federici who talked to Huffington Post said the technology is known as terahertz imaging detection.
