Perhaps not for Tennis, though. This thrill-a-second Nintendo classic was first released for the Famicom on January 14, 1984 and came to America with the first Nintendo Entertainment System push later on. Nobody really cared, though.
They DID care three years later on January 14, 1987 when Zelda II: The Adventure of Link came out. Released on disk in Japan, the U.S. release of the game was delayed almost two years due to a chip shortage. It was the second and final Zelda game for the NES.
New school gaming fans and even some old schoolers might not care about the January 15, 1981 release of Rally-X, but the game has a lot of interesting footnotes. Back when new, industry insiders considered the game the “next big hit” and predicted it would do better than Pac-Man and Defender. They were wrong. However, 2011′s Wreck-It Ralph film pays homage to the game with the “TurboTime” game and Turbo character, which were based on the cabinet art for Rally-X.
January 15, 1999 was the beginning of the end for WCW, and it showed with the release of WCW/NWO Thunder for the PlayStation. Panned by critics, it also looked like the end of wrestling games from THQ, but they’d continue to make them for decades to come. (NOW it looks like the end, though).

A mixed bag of video game history to celebrate this week. Let’s get it started.
On November 11, 1982 Atari brought Pole Position to North America by way of Namco. This racer went on to become the top earning arcade game of 1983 and influence almost every arcade racer that followed. That one turn really sucked, though.
Fast forward to another November 11 date in 2006. Hundreds of people waited in lines to get the new PlayStation 3 with a launch price of a quarter million dollars. Most stores turned 90 percent or more of potential buyers away due to horribly short supplies. Continue reading “This Week in Gaming History: PS3, 32X, XBox and Miyamoto: Prepare to Qualify” »

North American Playstation owners have been waiting for the delayed PS Store upgrade and now it has finally come out. The revamped store will bring a new homepage and much improved search functionality.
Originally due out back on October 23, the new store has now gone live in North America after Sony experienced some hiccups with the European launch. The new PS Store had been delayed for PS3 users in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Mexico until now.

Jerry lambert is well known for his recurring role as Kevin Butler in Playstation commercials. But he has recently teamed up with Bridgestone to create and star in a number of commercials for the company and Sony is not happy about it (via GT).
A more recent Bridgestone commercial, starring Lambert, that allows customers a chance to win a Nintendo Wii U has prompted Sony to take legal action.
Sony has confirmed that on Sept 11 it filed a lawsuit against Bridgestone and the production company behind the commercials, Wildcat Creek Inc. Jerry Lambert is the president of Wildcat Creek. Continue reading “Daily Gaming: Sony Sues Tire Company for “Stealing” Kevin Butler” »
