Picture 17Seems no one is really taking the White House’s new We The People petition movement– which encourages ordinary everyday citizens to create/submit the idea for any social reform of their choosing — very seriously.

The White House is adopting a change in policy, which may or may not be the result of people using the site for petitions to build a Death Star, or have each state receive their own Pokemon mascot (that has since been removed). blackman_pokemonIn case you haven’t noticed or have yet to realize you are writing the wrong year on your checks yet, 2013 is finally in full swing, and that means the video game world is, too.

Here’s your weekly required allowance of snarky reaction to video game headlines.

The Price is Right… on the cover

Baseball, minus the $9 hot dogs and crotch scratching, is still taking the mound for 2K Sports with the surprise announcement of MLB2K13, a game title that would also probably make a decent e-mail password. A report has recently surfaced of a Wii U owner hacking into Miiverse. Nintendo said that the user only accessed a prototype debug interface. The user claimed to have accidentally hacked into a debug menu for Miiverse by no particularly inventive or advanced means. We have some images below provided by the user of the various screens accessed.

Nintendo has issued a statement to Gamesindustry International (via Joystiq) regarding the situation where it claims that the area accessed by the user was merely “a mock up menu.” Nintendo also said in the statement that the menu is now taken down and inaccessible.

Pokéholics Anonymous, a short put together by comedy team underbellyshow, plays sort of like a mockumentary, assembled largely from Pokémon cartoon footage/fan conventions/trade shows. It tells the story of several poor Pokémon addicted-souls who must enter a Pokémon rehab facility that looks maybe a step above some back room AA meeting in a rec center.

The main character in this case is Francis/Frank, a dude who’s sort of modeled around the cartoon’s main character Ash Ketchum. Even his vernacular and behavior has grown into a carbon copy of Ash’s, which is pretty much just insipid blathering. But the great thing about underbellyshow‘s short is how it really captures the sentiment a lot of Pokemon lovers — and haters — have probably felt or a long time. Human nerdcore dynamo Richie Branson has penned yet another little ditty, again oriented around the anime universe. This time, instead of an ode to a particular series or anime legend, he’s doing it for a noble cause: to BRING TOONAMI BACK.

Perhaps with good reason — scarcely anything’s been heard from the Adult Swim peeps since exactly a month ago, when they hinted at the possibility with a couple of tweets, one of which read, “We’re listening.” Continue reading “Richie Branson Wants His Toonami Back (And So Do We)” »

Up until this weekend, Ruben Puig Lucegi was one of the biggest Pokemon champions in the world…and now he’s rumored to be facing a lifetime ban.

His team of Pokemon players were sitting pretty in a swanky hotel in scenic London at the United Kingdom Video Game Championship when he and his team decided that, for whatever reason, it’d behoove them to drop, trow and take a big dook right on the floor of the hotel hallway.

Upon finding out that it was him, Continue reading “Pokemon Champion Takes Crap on Hotel Floor, Loses Title Crown” »

We’ve all been there before…12 years old…not getting our way…our mothers grabbing us by the arm telling us to BE QUIET!

It’s tough being a kid and not getting that one item you’d give anything for, but props to our mothers for making us earn it and not giving in simply because we threw a tantrum.

Speaking of tantrums, this 12 year old takes it to another level when he learns he will NOT be getting the Pokemon game, no matter how much he screams, yells, or tempts a camera crew from Cops to show up and start rolling. Continue reading “Viral Video: Kid Freaks Over NOT Getting Pokemon” »

Playing Pokemon means you’re being controlled by the devil? That’s what this guy would have you believe. And who are we to disagree? This gentle-person truly believes that the most widely-recognized anime in the world, Pokemon — along with Minecraft, MagicQuest, and of course Guitar Hero — are the work of the devil.

No, it’s not a 1950s PSA, but merely the (unintentionally) hilarious creation of Christian TV network evangelicals who’ve sullied the name of a perfectly good Alan Moore graphic novel by righteously calling themselves “Watchmen.” Continue reading “Pokemon is Satan’s Creation…” »

If you had any doubt that Nintendo wasn’t going to jump on the iOS bandwagon, breaking everything we know the company claims to stand for, president Satoru Iwata officially shot down the rumors in a recent interview with Nikkei (translation via Andriasanq).

When asked about the possibility of Nintendo titles on smartphone platforms, Iwata responded, “This is absolutely not under consideration.” Continue reading “Nintendo: iOS games “absolutely not under consideration”” »

Sorry for the alliteration—journalism, no matter what form it takes, demands your headlines either be alliterative, or bad puns. Just be glad I spared you the puns.

But, for the real news—the New York Daily News is reporting a small win for G4M3RZ, even if they’re just elementary school students. A third grader at a Queens charter school wasn’t pleased when his school banned Pokemon cards from the student body, and decided to take action. Just like he was taught, he wrote a persuasive letter to his teacher arguing the benefits of Pokemon cards, which included teaching different math skills and possibly turning the game into an educational event for his math class.

Despite the letter being a “joke,” his teachers listened to Lucas, and the Vice-Principal overturned the decision. His teacher, Jennifer Toti, while amused by his argument, also made the valid point that “We teach the students they can use words for good, and if you use them the right way, you can change the world.”

So, thanks to this valuable lesson in public activism, Lucas and his friends can now trade their holographic first-edition Charizards for a movie-edition Lugia again. (What? Don’t give me that look!)

But we probably all had Pokemon cards, or Magic cards, or game boys, or something banned at our schools—tell us your stories below, and how you reacted. Were you ever able to overturn a rule by way of persuasive letter?
