With war game franchises like Call of Duty and MW 3 doing insane sales, seems only natural that gamers out there love a little (or a lot) of death with their gaming experience. Both a lot of boys and girls would probably agree that, hey, it’s fun to take out the pent up aggression of a long day at work/in school on fictional digitized characters, and just watch sh*t get blown up.
For game developers and programmers behind most of these games, it’s a little bit of a different story. Continue reading “The Angry Gamer: When Disgruntled Players Threaten Game Designers” »

“I had (made the move) countless times before, but on those occasions the wheel in my hands had been a white plastic controller,” writes Sally Adee, on how exactly the phenomenon known as GTP helped her in a particularly nasty scenario. “I had been saved by Mario Kart.”
While such a reality-bending experience sounds like something out of The Matrix or Videodrome, a similar scenario may no longer be as far-fetched as one would think. Continue reading “What is ‘GTP’? How Your Gaming Skills Could Save Your Life” »

A project entitled Alter Egoby photographer Robbie Cooper sets out to compare real world gamers with their online counterparts, giving us a glimpse into how gamers represent their own personalities through their online characters.
Cooper spent three years taking photos of gamers in Korea, France, China, and Germany, while at the same time documenting their online avatars in various games including City of Heroes, Second Life, and World of Warcraft.
The result was a fascinating look at how we perceive ourselves in the online world, and at the same time get lost in the fantasy of a world not restricted by the physicality of our bodies in real life. As the project’s description describes it, it’s a “phenomenon that is shaping the future of human interaction”.
Cooper has been no stranger to photographing gaming related subjects Continue reading “Avatars and Their Creators: This Is What Gamers Really Look Like” »

We’ve already seen a few re-imaginings of Apple’s voice-controlled Siri feature in the new iPhone 4S. First we had a voice over courtesy of Portal’s GLaDOS, then the promise of a HAL 9000 inspired-dock, and lastly a possible mind-control hack that some are calling out as fake.
Perhaps the only thing missing from these concepts is a little dose of reality. Much like Apple’s own ads for Siri, most of these concepts and products don’t depict the voice-controlled feature in the real world as we know it, but rather Apple’s fantasy world where everything is supposed to “just work”.
But today we bring you a reimagining of Siri in the real world courtesy of the guys over at CollegeHumor.
While the skit is clearly for comedy only, and not trying to point out any flaw in Siri, the voice-controlled AI does have a tendency of saying some pretty strange Continue reading “Apple’s Siri Assistant Gets Re-imagined with a Dose of Reality” »

Bobby Brown recently announced plans to return to television, this time with ex-bandmates New Edition, with whom he helped sire a whole new brand of ‘boy band’ rock. Which pretty much became a joke after New Edition went away.
“We have a conference call every Sunday,” said Bobby Brown of the new reunion. “We’re putting the band back together. I think the thing that was missing with us was prayer. Being able to pray together and understand our differences. I think that’s what made us fight so much.” Continue reading “Bobby Brown Beats The Odds, Plans Return to Reality TV” »

Anyone remember OutRun? It’s an arcade racing game from back in 1986 that I wouldn’t exactly call highly memorable, but researchers at UC Irvine have managed to cement its place in gaming history: They’ve turned OutRun driving into actual driving.
Confused? So were we–until we watched this video.
