Last week, throngs of rabidly pro-Apple, anti-Samsung Australians gathered outside a Sydney Apple store, touting signs and shouting slogans for (presumably the customers) to ‘Wake Up.”  And despite Samsung denying any and all involvement in the protests, last week’s flash mob ignited speculation that the protest might have been staged by Samsung themselves.

A few people wouldn’t put it past them — they were, after all, behind the slew of advertisements late last year proclaiming that ‘iPhone Users Are Sheep’, featuring Apple fans and customers dressed as uber-hipsters sipping lattes.

samsung anti apple facebook pageIf you frequent any tech sites it would be hard to ignore the ongoing litigation between Apple and Samsung, specifically stemming from Apple’s claims that Samsung “slavishly copy” the iPhone and iPad with their Galaxy smartphone and tablet lineups. Despite several temporary bans on Samsung products abroad, the company remains Apple’s fiercest competitor in the smartphone business. That’s why it’s not all that surprising their new ads take a “Mac vs PC” approach by pitting themselves against Apple and mocking iPhone users in the process.

Depicting what is clearly supposed to be exhausted Apple fans waiting in line to get their new iPhones, an Android user approaches and begins to explain how his Galaxy S II stacks up. It isn’t the first time, however, the image above from Samsung’s Facebook page is calling the iPhone “old school” Continue reading “Samsung Continues With The Anti-Apple iPhone Bashing Ads” »

transparent flexible displayPerhaps in a response to Microsoft’s vision of the future, Samsung today dropped the video below showing off how they envision the future tablet form factor, specifically keeping in mind the flexible AMOLED technology they’re currently developing.

Although the video is in Korean, we can tell from the visuals the concept appears to be a sheet of glass about the size of an iPad, with no obvious connections, ports, or visible internal hardware. We’re not exactly sure how Samsung plans on powering these magical glass slates, but a flexible, foldable, 3D display might not be too far off… Continue reading “Samsung Shows Off Flexible, Transparent, 3D Tablet in New Concept Video” »

galaxy next to iphone 4Have sales of the Galaxy S II (practically an iPhone 4 clone) allowed Samsung to pass Apple as the top smartphone vendor?

If the analysts are to be believed, Samsung did just exactly that, surpassing Apple during the third quarter with 27.8 million smartphone shipments in contrast to Apple’s 17.1 million. These numbers account for Samsung capturing 23.8 percent of the global smartphone market (in shipments) and Apple with 14.6 percent, this according to a report from Strategy Analytics market research firm. AT&T has just announced five new Android handsets making their way to the carrier this year. Included in the new lineup is the Motorola Atrix 2, Samsung Double Time, Pantech Pocket, Samsung Captivate Glide, and the AT&T Avail.

Perhaps the most noteworthy of the five is the Motorola Atrix 2. We got a look at this device back at CES and were pretty impressed with the hardware. Included in the Atrix 2 is a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4-3-inch 960 x 540 qHD display, 8-megapixel main camera capable of 1080p HD capture, and an unlisted front-facing camera. Looking to upgrade to a new Android device on Sprint? Starting today Samsung’s Galaxy S II variant, the Epic 4G Touch is officially available via the Sprint website. It’s gonna set you back $200 on the usual two year commitment, but the good news is you’ll be getting one of the better Android-powered smartphones on the market for much less than possible before now.

If you couldn’t bring yourself to part with $600+ for the unlocked Galaxy S II, the subsidized price will definitely make it easier to make the switch. The 4G WiMax-capable device sports a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display and an impressive 7.7-thin design. Most of the other hardware specs mirror its Galaxy S II counterpart available on other carriers. We already knew in recent months that Apple was passing Nokia as top smartphone manufacturer worldwide, but today a new report from Digitimes confirms Apple’s dominance with a prediction of 86.4 million iPhones to be shipped in 2011. That’s an 82% growth from the previous year’s 47.5 million units.  Continue reading “Apple to pass Nokia in 2011 with an estimated 86.4 million iPhones” »

Perhaps one of the most interesting new products to be unveiled at this year’s IFA, currently taking place in Berlin, Germany, is Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 5.3 tablet/smartphone hybrid and Galaxy Tab 7.7.

While we’re not sure whether Samsung is referring to their new Galaxy Note device as a smartphone or a tablet, it packs in a phone and comes with an interesting 5.3-inch display, unlike any other currently on the market. Early reviews of the 1280×800 SuperAMOLED display have been amazing, but we’re not too sure how comfortable it will be in your pocket (if it even fits). The Note comes with a Samsung-built 1.4GHz single core processor, and runs Gingerbread with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top.

The newly announced Galaxy Tab 7.7, on the other hand, runs Android Honeycomb 3.2 (which recently received some upgrades for smaller screened tablets), and of course sports a 7.7-inch display with an incredibly thin 7.89mm profile. It also mirrors many of the Note’s specs but bumps up to a dual core processor Continue reading “Galaxy Note 5.3 hybrid and Galaxy Tab 7.7 unveiled by Samsung” »

Some background for you folks first: the state of Patent law in America is righteously fucked. This American Life recently ran an article investigating the companies who are filing patent-violation lawsuits en masse, and found that they’re shell corporations within shell corporations, who’ve acquired masses of patents, and license them out to other companies who do all the dirty work of violating lawsuits. Apple Versus HTC, Samsung, Others—Is This Really About Google?

So we’ve been reporting about the various lawsuits flying back and forth in front of the ITC between Apple and other tech giants—recently HTC lost big time when the ITC ruled that it had violated several of Apple’s patents (Though they did not specify which ones publicly) So why is Apple so adamant about getting HTC and Samsung to bow before the Cupertino giant?

Apparently it’s all about Google. Samsung, HTC, and others that will probably soon feel the wrath of Jobs are obviously all the manufacturers of the various Android cell phones–currently the only serious contender against iPhone in the smartphone war. (No Blackberry. You do not get invited to this party.)

If this patent ruling holds up, these developers will be hamstrung in their ability to produce the phones UNLESS they submit to Apple and pay for the use of the patents. For those of you who already own Android phones, this won’t affect you, but for future Android customers it could mean an increase in prices.

So, legit move by Apple, or dick one? YOU TELL US.

Batman Says: "You've Got To Be Kidding Me."

There’s no way they think this will really work…

FOSS Patents is reporting today that Samsung has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, with the express purpose of restricting the import of the following types of products: “Mobile Electronic Devices, Portable Music and Data Processing Devices, and Tablet Computers.”

So in everyday lingo, iPhones, iPods, and iPads. As in, the devices each of yoy has at least one of in your household. Samsung’s publicity stunt comes courtesy of an ongoing battle between Apple and Samsung regarding various patents each company claims the other stole. Apple and Samsung were previously partnered for producing the various gadgets and gizmos Apple’s released, but apparently, Continue reading “TECH – Samsung Files ITC Complaint, Tries to get Apple to Stop Importing iPods, iPads, and iPhones.” »
