Yes indeed… it’s time for another weekly dose of totally serious not-serious yet serious look at video gaming news from the past week. Watch as I make the internet humor without having to make penis jokes, possibly an internet first.
Best Buy gets an NES
The story of a Best Buy employee’s efforts to save an original Nintendo Entertainment System set went viral this week.
A customer brought in a boxed NES Deluxe Set, complete with original console and the R.O.B. robot, for the store’s “Renew Blue” recycling program, which exists as a green dumping ground for old electronics. How a person who didn’t realize the value of this set found their way into an electronics store was not explained.
Under company policy this meant the set had to be destroyed. The employee refused to allow that to happen, risking his job by doing so, until Best Buy corporate intervened, saving the set to place on display at their corporate headquarters.
Several boxed examples of the NES Deluxe Set can be found on eBay, ranging in price from $250-$400, meaning the acquisition of this set tripled the revenue of the Best Buy chain for the first quarter of 2013.

Achievement Unlocked: 10G – Never teach grandma about recycling before leaving her alone with your classic game consoles, folks.
Electronic Arts Aims Again
Battlefield 4 has been revealed, totally breaking the tradition that says first-person shooters are not allowed to have sequels.
“That’s cute,” said Activision’s Call of Duty marketing team.
Achievement Unlocked: 20G – Hate for me that one if you want, but you and I both know which one is going to sell more. Yes, yes… you’ll be part of the reason why, too.
Another Game Studio Guru Steps Down
Yoichi Wada, the president of Square Enix, has stepped down.
In the tradition of the modern-day Final Fantasy games, Wada’s exit from corporate headquarters was linear, only taking numerous hours as he encountered people with long drawn-out stories.
On the flight home, Wada was reportedly confused by the in-flight movie, as it didn’t let him control the characters every 22 minutes.
Achievement Unlocked: 30G – “But I’m the leading man, and you know what they say about the leading man!” Wada was reported as saying on the way out.
Choppy Choppy Your Pee Pee
A minor league baseball park has installed a urinal with a pee-controlled video game installed. To move your snowboarder left… you pee to the left. Want him to go right? Pee to the right. No confirmation yet on if he has to eat yellow snow in the event of a crash.
While much of the coverage of this game has poked fun at it, groups of sexist male competitive gamers rejoiced at the invention of a video game they can truthfully claim to be superior to women in playing.
Maybe.
Achievement Unlocked: 40G – I’ll stick with my long-time favorite pee-game ‘Put a Hole Through the Urinal Cake’ for now.
Speaking of the Underbelly of Sexism in Gaming…
PAX East took place over the weekend. While many people returned with the flu and a thirteen pound bucket of promotional buttons, Crystal Dynamics Meagan Marie returned with a story. Turns out a member of the gaming “press” thought it was appropriate to ask a sexually-based question on camera during a Tomb Raider cosplay gathering.
Marie’s powerful blog about the experience, and several other industry experiences of it’s kind, was picked up by a number of gaming news sites yesterday.
“Wow, I’m sure glad everyone doesn’t know it was me who made that joke. People would likely have some things to say to me about it,” said a guy with the initials N.W., the person who I’ve confirmed made the weaksauce sexist PAX remarks.
Achievement Unlocked: 50G – Don’t worry, fella… just carefully explain how and why you thought it was funny and I’m sure everyone will totally understand and respect that, right? Yeah. Keep telling yourself that.
Check back every Thursday for more totally serious and hard-hitting video gaming journalism. There’s ways to check up and ensure that you are, you know.

Yoichi Wada has announced his resignation as President and CEO of Square Enix, citing severe profit losses to the company over the last fiscal year. Representative Director Yousuke Matsuda will officially take over all of Wada’s former duties, while Wada himself is re-assigned to an as-yet unspecified new role.
According to The Next Web, Square Enix’s decision is partly a result of huge shortcomings in projected gains for the company over the last fiscal year — Continue reading “Longtime Square Enix President Steps Down; Company Points to “Extraordinary Losses”” »

Square-Enix had a disappointing showing at the Playstation 4 unveiling last month, to say the least, once again showing the same tech demo/CGI footage that we have been seeing for a while now.
But today rumors have surfaced pertaining to a possible co-development plan for FF15 between Sony and Square.
According to a rumor from VGLeaks via NeoGaf Final Fantasy 15 is currently in development and will be exclusively for the Playstation 4.

Square Enix is well known for its use of countdown clocks to announce new games. Last night the publisher launched another countdown teaser site that ends on December 11 at 10pm ET (via Polygon).
The countdown clock can be found here along with a starry, space themed backdrop. We see some planets and more importantly the word “STAR” in the top right hand corner. Many have suggested that this could be hinting at a new Star Ocean title.

We have been seeing a lot of crossover DLC in the last little while including the likes of Square Enix who seems to be putting Adam Jensen’s gear from Deus Ex: Human Revolution in just about all of its games lately.
Well not all of them, but we have reports from Silconera via IGN today of some new Hitman: Absolution DLC that features content from Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Silconera said that it has learned of some new DLC for the long awaited HD Hitman game in the way of new suits and weapons. Hitman: Absolution launched today.

It has been more than half a decade since we last saw Agent 47 in action, but tomorrow the wait is finally over when Hitman: Absolution hits store shelves. The review scores for the Square Enix published title are already popping up online and, although not surprising, they are all over the map ranging from a 6.9 from Gametrailers to a 9.0 from IGN.
The Hitman series has always been regarded as somewhat if a niche game and even with all the steps the developers have taken to please everyone, it looks as though the newest iteration in the series has remained that way.

Square Enix is stepping into the browser based game space with its new delivery service Core Online. According to Kotaku, Square will be releasing its older titles through Core Online for free, at this point the game selection is minimal but the company says the library of free titles will grow moving forward.
Squeenix is a large company that is made up of many different publishers representing games like Tomb Raider, Hitman and Final Fantasy among many others. Normally known for fairly lofty pricing models it is interesting to see Square start to offer some of its really high quality older titles for completely free–well, not completely free…

Square Enix’s highly acclaimed DS title ‘The World Ends With You’ landed in the App store this weekend. The iOS version of the title is completely reworked for the platform and includes some added functionality as well.
Originally developed for the DS by personnel from Nintendo’s Kingdom Hearts team, ‘The World Ends With You’ (‘It’s A Wonderful World’ in Japan) is an action RPG set in modern day Shibuya, Tokyo. In the DS version, some complained the game can be complicated at times both because of its original approach to combat and the steep learning curve of the game’s battle system.

Square Enix is set to unveil its plans for the next Final Fantasy XIII game come September 1st at TGS 2012. A new teaser site has just recently been put up hinting at the next iteration in the franchise.
The next game, as the site says, will be the continuation of the Lightning saga, most likely Final Fantasy XIII-3.
Rumors regarding the announcement of FFXIII-3 have been around for a little while now. Many felt the game would end up continuing for a few reasons, one of which, being the most obvious, was when XIII-2 ended with “To Be Continued”.

Earlier this morning the popular OUYA Kickstarter campaign came to a close, as I’m sure you know, well above its initial goal. With a total of 63,416 backers the OUYA received a total of $8,596,475 in funding when it was all said and done.
Back in July OUYA set a now seemingly modest funding goal of $950,000 when the Kickstarter campaign went up. Within a short 7 hours the campaign became the most successful Kickstarter project to date.
Ouya founder and CEO Julie Urhman told IGN back in July, Continue reading “DAILY GAMING: Ouya Kickstarter Ends at over $8.5 million, Four Controller Support” »

It looks like Final Fantasy 7 is getting an updated PC release, according to Joystiq. A Google cache of the site finalfantasyviipc.com shows evidence of the title’s re-release. Final fantasy 7 was originally released for the PC in 1998.
The game will include several upgrades in terms of both modern day support, as well as some minor adjustments to gameplay mechanics. The release is also said to include a brand new achievement system that lets you “show off your in-game accomplishments and put your gaming skills to the test” with 36 achievements to unlock. If you ever wanted to play Final Fantasy III on your PSP, it looks like you will soon have the opportunity, as Square Enix just confirmed the game is coming (according to Andriasang). We get a closer look at how the title looks on the PSP with brand new screenshots as well as a teaser trailer for the release (below).

One the biggest in the RPG world, Square Enix, is bringing yet another of its games to mobile platforms that was previously not available in English. Through an announcement at this year’s E3, Final Fantasy Dimensions was finally confirmed for iOS and Android.

Many have expressed their discontent with the lack of surprising new media to come out of E3, most specifically, new games. Although some of us are a little disappointed in Square Enix not showing anything from Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the Japanese developer came out last second with a brand new tech demo called Agni’s Philosophy (seen below).
The tech demo, in many ways, is quite a direct departure from what we are normally used to with FF trailers. The intense cinematics and breathtaking visuals are there, but almost everything else is telling us that Final Fantasy is changing. Yesterday Square Enix released an intriguing image teasing a new trailer for Hitman Absolution (below). Filled with leather-clad nuns with machine guns and rocket launchers, most didn’t know what to make of the image. Today we get a look at the promised trailer titled “Hitman Absolution – Attack of the Saints”, and it leaves us with just as many questions as we had yesterday.
In the trailer we see the aforementioned heavily armed “specialized wetworks team” of nuns approaching Agent 47 who is in a “run-down motel room” bandaging his wounds. 47 gets the drop on them showing off both his silent assassin skills with the fibre wire, as well as his hand to hand combat efficiency. With E3 just around the corner, we are starting to see a lot of leaks from upcoming titles we expect to see more of at the show. Today we get a look at some machine gun nuns from Hitman Absolution teasing tomorrow’s release of the game’s E3 Hitman Saints Trailer (via Kotaku).
Today Square Enix released an image showing almost ninja like nuns equipped with some heavy artillery dressed in head to toe vinyl suits. The image (below) depicts 8 nuns all with a slightly different look and carrying different weapons.

Earlier this week I/O tweeted about a “major” announcement coming today. Due to several leaks we already knew that the Hitman: Sniper Challenge was going to be at least apart of today’s big announcement. We also found out today the Hitman Absolution release date, November 20 2012.
Square Enix made it official today (via The Verge), confirming those who pre-order Absolution from Gamestop will receive the stand alone game Hitman: Sniper Challenge that was leaked on Tuesday. During this bonus mission players will take on the role of agent 47 once again, this time to take out Richard Strong Jr., the CEO of Stallion Armaments. Players will be tasked with taking out Richard and his bodyguards while trying to hide all the bodies, score multipliers and unlock upgrades.
