No they aren’t nine year olds with nothing but time on their hands, on average they are 30 years old and have been playing video games for 12 years. Also, the split is almost 50/50 guys vs. girls, with 38% of all gamers playing “social games.” The last statistic indicating that games like Farmville and Words with Friends have escewed the gaming demographic over the past several years.
Perhaps the most striking number were the total number of dollars grossed from 2011 – almost $25 billion for the gaming industry as a whole. Thats 7 billion less than the entire global box office (which North America contributed roughly $10 billion, too). Continue reading “Say What? Average Gamer is 30 years Old, Probably a Woman” »

Where they found these stats we’re not sure, but they’re interesting nevertheless.
Bet you didn’t know that there are more active cell phones on the face of the planet than their are people — thanks to paranoid businessman and their spoiled children (and drug dealers who may or may technically be one and the same).
Of note, 55% of people have felt uncomfortable overhearing a cell phone conversation, which leaves a rather uncomfortable 45% to be comfortable overhearing sprinklings of someone else’s private life. I tried coming up with a more creative/catchier title, but honestly, what the hell else is there to say other than look at the infographic below. Sure gameplay doesn’t always mean greatness, but holy Master Chief if some of these stats don’t blow you away:
- 20 million games played…
- Over 123 Trillion Minutes Played…
That doesn’t even include the time spent on Continue reading “Why HALO Might Be The Greatest Game of The Modern Era (Yes I Have Statistics)” »

EA has now announced the sales numbers for its recently released sci-fi action hit Mass Effect 3. We all expected Mass Effect 3 to make headway in the sales department but the numbers coming out of EA are quite staggering. Mass Effect 3 had an ambitious midnight sale the day of the game’s launch, possibly pushing the title to sell over 890,000 copies in its first 24 hours in North America alone.
Yesterday at the Wedbush Technology Media and Telecommunications Conference, which took place in New York City, John Riccitiello of EA spoke about ME3 meeting the company’s expectations”
“We anticipated it doing well, so we’re happy.”

In a day where consoles are king, and PC gaming is seemingly falling to the wayside, some recently released stats show us exactly how PC gaming is doing. The infographic shows us that PC gaming, thanks to Valve and Steam users, is just as important and popular as ever.
Analyzing Valve’s market share through Steam, the graphic (below) from VideoGameDesignSchools gives us an interesting perspective. With over 40 million Steam accounts (a tie with Xbox Live), Valve currently has approximately 51% of the digital game distirbution market, beating out closest competitors Amazon, Gamestop, and MS Games. With just about every politician urging Apple to bring jobs back home to the U.S. amid Apple’s supply chain abroad coming under scrutiny for poor working conditions, perhaps it was about time someone mentioned the “App Economy”.
According to a new study, apps for mobile devices have created approximately 466,000 jobs in the US since 2008.
The numbers come from a TechNet sponsored study, with a little help from South Mountain Economics, which noted America’s App Economy “had zero jobs just Continue reading “The ‘App Economy’ Has Created Over 466,000 Jobs In The US” »

The guys over at MBAOnline have put together this new infographic showing off just how the world’s biggest tech company (who has more cash than the U.S. government) compares to America’s favorite fruit of the same name.
Within the infograph we learn a few interesting stats. For instance, did you know that for the price of one iPhone 4S you could buy approximately 2000 apples? The study bases the number on the price of an unlocked 16GB iPhone 4S to apples at a rate of around $1 per pound.
We learn that in 2009 there were approximately 71,000,000 tons of apples produced Continue reading “Apple to Apples: Our Favorite Tech Products vs America’s Favorite Fruit” »

Right on the heels of Google announcing 10 billion downloads in the Android Market, Apple has today shared some numbers announcing impressive stats for the App Store and Mac App Store.
Apple has officially announced the App Store on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is home to over 500,000 apps with more than 18 billion app downloads since the store’s launch.
Currently, an average of about 1 billion apps are being downloaded per month. Building block-filled sandbox Minecraft is perhaps the biggest indie game in recent memory, and as of last count, the constantly refreshing counter on the game’s website is up to 4,016,541 copies sold. In fact, I’ve changed the number several times before publishing this article as it seems to be refreshing just about every minute.
This is a pretty impressive milestone for an indie game that began development in 2009 by relatively unknown Swedish developer Markus Persson. The game, which still comes with the “beta” tag attached, is technically still in development, but has already grown to 16,140,895 registered players and allowed Persson to form his own company, Mojang. There are currently official ports for iOS and Xbox Kinect in development, while the PC beta and Continue reading “MINECRAFT to join PAC-MAN and MARIO BROS. at Smithsonian as It Moves Past 4 Million Copies Sold” »

Mobile game developer Rovio shared some pretty impressive statistics regarding their enormously popular Angry Birds franchise today. First off, the company announced 500 million total downloads across “various platforms”, claiming to be “one of the most downloaded games in the history of gaming”. Which must include all platforms — iOS, Android, Chrome, PC, Mac, etc.
To celebrate the occasion, Rovio released the video below sharing some of the incredible statistics over the relatively short time the game has been released. Continue reading “Angry Birds Hits Half a Billion Downloads…What’s Next?” »

We already knew in recent months that Apple was passing Nokia as top smartphone manufacturer worldwide, but today a new report from Digitimes confirms Apple’s dominance with a prediction of 86.4 million iPhones to be shipped in 2011. That’s an 82% growth from the previous year’s 47.5 million units. Continue reading “Apple to pass Nokia in 2011 with an estimated 86.4 million iPhones” »
