In this day and age, nearly everything revolves around technology, but the relative stagnancy of the U.S. education system is holding us back. According to Code.org, 60% of all math and science related jobs are computer programming jobs, yet computer science students comprise a minuscule 2% of math and science students. While this could be attributed to a lack of interest or a variety of other issues, Code.org sites that nine out of ten schools do not offer programming courses and coding classes don’t even count towards high school graduation requirements in 41 out of the 50 United States.

In addition to its many campus-based clubs — The Radcliffe Drama Club and Skull and Bones-like The Porcellian Club among them– Harvard can now officially list a student sex club to its list of student organizations.
Last week, Harvard’s College Munch for the BDSM (Bondage/Sado-Masochism) was officially approved as an organization by the University’s Committee on Student Life. Continue reading “Harvard OKs Campus Student Bondage and Sex Club” »

It’s not the first time we’ve ever seen a group of 1337 hackerz turn the side of a building into a video game, but dammit if it still isn’t amazing. Students at MIT turned the Earth and Planetary Science “Green Building” into a game of Tetris, using an actual console to move and rotate the blocks (see photo below). Lost in the shuffle of Apple’s keynote announcement — declaring the iPad will again once again change the world (again) — is the story of how rural mexican students are developing robotic technology that rivals China and Puerto Rico.
Chiapas is the 8th largest state in Mexico, and is largely comprised of an indigenous population that dates back to the Mayans. Just a decade ago, only a third of the state’s residents had electricity, half did NOT have potable water, and OVER half of the schools offered education only to the third grade with most dropped out by the end of first grade. With just about every smartphone manufacturer suing every other, and iOS and Android going head to head to capture the market, the relationships between smartphone vendors can often be hard to keep track of.
Thankfully, we now have a Japanese manga comic documenting the dramas by representing each company as a student at “Sweet Android High-school” (via TNW).
The comic is currently running in Continue reading “Sweet Android High-school: A Japanese Comic Depicting Smartphone Vendors as Students” »

Just a few weeks back, billionaire Peter Thiel (yes, that one guy in the Social Network) offered students the chance to drop out of college and invest in their own ideas. It was meant (amongst other things) to display whether or not personal creativity was more important than the structure provided by the University system–is a college degree necessary when you already have the skills to develop the idea and bring it to life?
Unemployment is still at roughly 10% in this country, a number that is dramatically higher in some areas, and is arguably worse given how many people don’t even report that they are unemployed. A high number of unemployed individuals just spent thousands upon thousands of dollars to put themselves into the educated class. Now they are simply in another class…serious debt.
What were these students expecting? Well, for starters, that having a passion and knowing what they wanted to do with said passion Continue reading “CULTURE- College Degrees Aren’t Worth the Debt” »
