fire-emblem-awakening-700x325The Fire Emblem series first waves in America after two of its iconic heroes, Roy and Marth, first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee back in 2001, with a proper entry landing in North America in 2003. While the series is primarily known for its medieval fantasy strategy elements and story-based focus, Fire Emblem Awakening on the 3DS has one of the side mechanics of the series–its unit support system, to the foreground of both the gameplay and narrative elements of the story.

For those not familiar with the support system, it basically works like this–characters who stand near each other in battle can develop relationships, ranking from C to S. Depending on how high a unit’s relationship with another character is, it can influence that character’s outcome at the end of the game and make them stronger in battle. In older titles, characters could gain S rank support with 1 character of any gender, representing romance if it was between two characters of opposite genders, and long-lasting friendship if it was with a same-gendered character. In Awakening, S-ranked support is reserved strictly for marriage. Continue reading “I Loved Fire Emblem: Awakening, But I Still Couldn’t Overlook This Huge Problem” »

We had the privilege of talking comics with legendary Hulk writer, Peter David at Comic-con 2012, this year. But last week on December 30th, Peter self-reported that he had suffered a stroke. Needless to say it was a scary incident, but as his wife updates via Peter’s blog, a week later, Peter is making progress towards an initial recovery.

While this news is encouraging, the ultimate struggle back to recovery will be very long and obviously expensive. Peter reportedly has health insurance, but situations like this often go beyond most coverage plans. Gamers paying attention to Twitter last night might have noticed #1Reasonwhy exploding on twitter as women who work in game design, freelance art, and other parts of the video game industry began sharing their stories of dealing with mistreatment and gender inequality in the workplace.

For many uneducated readers, this feed gives the chance to see into an unfortunately dark side of game development, one which has become more exposed in the last few years as more and more stories like this come to light.

In the last 15 hours Continue reading “#1Reasonwhy Explodes on Twitter, Highlights Gender Gap and Harassment in Game Development” »

Some EA Origin security issues have surfaced with an untold number of accounts being hijacked. According to Eurogamer some of the service’s users have been emailed by Origin saying that they have successfully changed their account’s password or email even when they have not. A handful or more of these cases have popped up on various outlets including the NeoGaf forum and the EA support boards.

Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter was one of these unfortunate souls to have their account hijacked. Below you can see the email he received from Origin.

Epic Games just announced that the Unreal Development Kit Beta, released yesterday, now includes support for Mac OS X. This will see games running on Mac OS using Unreal Engine 3, much like the company has done with iOS titles on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The update also brings added support for iOS… Continue reading “Unreal Engine 3 comes to Mac OS X with new UDK beta” »

An update was finally pushed out today for the Android Netflix app, bringing with it support for ALL Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices.

Prior to today’s update the app was only compatible with a handful of handsets, annoying quite a few Android users (to say the least). The good news is the update brings support to approximately 80% of Android devices (according to the Android developers resources), so chances are your device is covered.

Up until now there were a few workarounds to getting Netflix up and running on unsupported devices, but an official update is better late than never. However, it seems there is still no decent tablet support, apart from a few including the Lenovo ThinkPad and IdeadPad K1. A great example of Android’s fragmentation at work. Either way, the update is certainly welcomed. Continue reading “Netflix now available on all Android 2.2 (Froyo) and 2.3 (Gingerbread) devices” »

Perhaps the one feature noticeably still missing from iOS devices is Flash support, which is why we’re happy to report Adobe has finally stepped up to the plate with Flash Media Server 4.5. Don’t be fooled, however, this doesn’t mean iPhone and iPad are getting native Flash support. Don’t expect to be playing your favorite flash games anytime soon… Continue reading “Adobe brings flash support to iPhone and iPad, kind of…” »

No matter what anyone tells you, or what you might think, our parents ALWAYS want what’s best for us. Even when it comes to video games…

Most parents are simply not familiar with video games–in a way, they’re afraid of them. Even to this day, the fact that I write about video games is something of an oddity to my parents. It’s something that wasn’t part of their childhood, and thus, they don’t know how to react to something they don’t have any personal experience with. They think it doesn’t have a great deal of importance, maybe compared to the grand scheme of things, video games don’t. But that isn’t to say that they’re worthless or they don’t have tremendous value. Continue reading “5 Reasons Why Parents Don’t Understand Video Games (How You Can Change Their Minds)” »
