Fink, aka Andrew Fink, is a Google employee who works at the company’s New York City office. According to Geek.com, Google’s ‘official’ company policy is that their employees only have to work 80% of the time they’re there.
The other 20%, apparently, can be spent doing whatever you want (wonder if they have an open bar like Electronic Arts, hahaha). In the case of Fink, though, some of that 20% was spent making this particular video. Continue reading “Rappa Please: Google Employee Rhymes About How Awesome Google Is (Video)” »

Ever wish you could pick up the phone while you were doing push-ups? How about answering the phone with your leg while you’re sitting on the john?
A Japanese Guy, dubbed on the internet simply as a Japanese Guy, currently has over 500,000 views for a video showing off a nifty, custom made quick draw system for your iPhone.
The product is two parts ingenious, three parts hilarious, as the device’s creator shows us different ways to use the quick draw system and poke your eye out all at the same time. Currently, there’s no word if the phone is for sale, or if you need your own lawyer just to use it in public. Dude your getting a Dell…and a 300 dollar fake warranty that doesn’t really exist.
That’s what happeend to Laptop Magazine, who made three calls to Dell customer service reps, based in India. The phone ops warned them not to let their laptop battery fall below 40% but not to fret, they were now the winners of a daily drawing to purchase a 4 year warranty for $317.
The kicker…there is no “daily drawing.”

It’s been about a year since we reported on animated pop stars like Hatsune Miku taking over the real world of pop music and replacing your flesh and blood pop stars.
The trend is a bit more popular in Asia, as opposed to the U.S., where the closest we’ve gotten to it is the Tupac hologram at Coachella this year.
Meanwhile, Miku-mania continues in Japan, where the anime icon is still selling Toyotas, in addition to her own albums. This video, which details one man’s ‘virtual date’ with her, is a perfect and somewhat creepy example.
In other words, none of this was added in post production; our man used something called Xtion PRO by ASUS (very similar to KINECT; motion sensing software) and some Continue reading “Man’s ‘Date’ With Virtual Pop Star Hatsune Miku is Sorta Disturbing” »

According to a statement this week from the New York City Police Foundation, it is currently developing and testing new technology designed to detect secured weapons from a distance in conjunction with the Defense Department.
A report from the The New York Times said the technology works as a “reverse infrared mapping tool by reading the energy people emit and pinpointing where that flow is blocked by some object, like a gun”. Physics professor John Federici who talked to Huffington Post said the technology is known as terahertz imaging detection. Imagine watching a video online and being able to click individual objects to get more information or relevant content. Watching a new Sprint commercial showing off several Android devices? Click the one you’re interested in and a pop-up window provides you with pricing, specs, and links to purchase it. It’s not quite a reality yet, but that’s just one potential use for video object recognition and indexing technology created by startup Veenome.
Technology evangelist and blogger Robert Scoble recently got to sit down with CEO of Veenome Kevin Lenane to talk about how the unique video object recognition and indexing technology works. Continue reading “Veenome Recognizes Objects In Videos, Makes Them Clickable” »

Progeny Systems, a company that specializes in developing advanced technology for the United States Department of Defense, recently visited marines at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejune, N.C to get their opinion on future advanced military technology.
Lt. Col. Randy G. Pugh, an intelligence officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force had this to say on the Official U.S. Marine Corps Website:
“The idea was to bring together the engineers that are building these different systems with the people that are going to eventually use these systems. So that rather than waiting to the end when you hand a Marine something and say this is what I think you want. You’ve asked them all along the way your building it.”

While the majority of us are awaiting the next big product unveiling from companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Sony with high hopes, we often forget about some of the disastrous product unveilings, prototypes, and concepts that never quite took off. This holiday weekend, be thankful that some of these remarkably bad product designs didn’t get the chance to impact the direction of the industry.
Some might have had potential but were commercial failures for good reason, while others were just downright bad decisions. Thankfully, some were premature concepts that acted as stepping stones to better products, and on that note, we start things out with the tablets… Continue reading “The Top 5 Gadgets We Should Be Thankful NEVER happened” »

It’s no secret that with trillions of dollars in debt, unemployment nearing double digits, and gasoline prices that rival most footlongs at Subway (premium sandwiches not included) things aren’t looking so good for America’s future right now…
As a sign of dissatisfaction, our generation a.k.a. the “Millenials” who were born after 1981, have begun to occupy some street corners here and there and write articles that may or may not end up in some google search results 2 years from now. But what are we really doing to combat the problems that many members of the older generations are leaving for OUR GENERATION TO SOLVE?
The answer may rest in how much success we’re having with one of our most beloved assets: Technology. Particularly, how effectively are we using the internet and social media to spur our generation’s growth? Continue reading “iCould: Is Technology Holding Our Generation Back or Are We Just FAILING to Use It Correctly?” »

The video below is showing a thought-controlled Siri hack known as Project Black Mirror that monitors brain wave activity using ECG pads, matches the incoming signal with pre-determined digital patterns saved on a computer, and uses a SpeakJet speech synthesizer chip to convert the patterns into commands Siri can recognize.
The program used to filter the signals was of course trained to recognize signature brain wave patterns related to thinking about a certain command, such as “call”. The end result is the ability to initiate a call and about 25 other Siri commands using just your thoughts Continue reading “‘Project Black Mirror’ Siri Hack Shows Off the Future of Mind-Controlled Smartphones” »

Korean smartphone manufacturer Pantech has never had the brand recognition of companies like Samsung and Apple in the US smartphone market. However, you may want to take a second look at their new Vega LTE device, which other than sporting some surprisingly impressive specs, also includes touch-free gestures.
Imagine waving your hand in front of the device’s built-in camera to perform Kinect-like gestures without actually touching the screen. These gestures won’t necessarily be used as the primary navigation method, but could be used for tasks like answering calls and playing music. The video below shows a woman answering a call using a touch-free gesture while her hands are covered in whatever that is she’s Continue reading “Pantech Android smartphones get Kinect-style, touch-free gestures [video]” »

Though it looks like a poor man’s Cerebro from X-Men, this contraption is the creation of Dr. Stuart Johnson, a ADHD researcher/expert from Australia. Working closely with a brain computer interface company in Silicon Valley called Neuro Sky, Dr. Johnson has begun development on a revolutionary new tool/game designed specifically to monitor and improve a child’s attention deficit disorder.
Johnson’s endeavor grew out of parent’s concerns that their children were on too much medication, and he decided to use the innovations of gaming to improve on ADHD treatment.
Kids put on the MindWave headset, which has a wireless connection to the players PC and closely monitors activity in the cerebral cortex Continue reading “Brain Control Device or Revolutionary Gaming? Maybe Both…” »

That’s according to his new blog, at least, in which the famed nerdcore hip hopper dispelled certain notions about hacking:
Personally, the most common misconception i find people have about what constitutes hacking by the general public is they feel it requires some exceptional and unique technical prowess. in reality, hacking is all about PEOPLE.

So what if the World used solar power? First, the gas/oil companies would all but sh!t themselves, causing a dramatic decrease in US support from the middle east, but almost as importingly, a huge decrease in the number of people paying millions to write their name in the sand. Yeah, yeah, OSX Lion launched, the Macbook is dead, new Macbook air, blah blah blah. The best Apple news this week didn’t come out of Cupertino, it came out of China. Specifically, provinces of China where authorized Apple stores don’t exist because of supply and demand.
OR DO THEY?! Dozens of fake “Apple stoers” (no, that’s not a misspelling) are cropping up left and right in remote provinces of the nation–the one in the article being in the backwater area of Kunming. When a blogger visiting the province found one of these stores, (and its subtle non-Apple store characteristics), she snapped several pictures and blasted them to the internet– Continue reading “Chinese Fake Apple Stores = Best Apple Story of the Week” »

Okay, not for Science. Not really for science, it’s just science at work here.
But, past my mad science jokes lies an uplifting story for your day about how a person can bounce back from the brink of death. The Daily Mail’s got a story about a young woman named Taisia Sidorova, who was the unfortunate victim of a car crash three years ago that she wasn’t expected to survive. Doctors were forced to remove the left part of her brain, and they went so far as to perform the last rites on her, not giving her the slightest hope of survival Continue reading “Girl Suffers Brain Damage, Gains Artistic Talent—FOR SCIENCE” »
