Microsoft updated the Kinect for Windows runtime and software development kit with a number of new features today. Microsoft has decided to branch Kinect out for motion recognition in non-gaming applications (via CNET). Microsoft also announced today that Kinect for Windows is now available in China.
This new update will allow developers to tap into the device much deeper than ever before. The SDK update will allow access to data from the sensor’s accelerometer as well as the use of an infrared stream among other things.
Although much of the improvements are seemingly for non-gaming applications it is possible that game developers will be able to make use of the deeper data set. Continue reading “Daily Tech: Microsoft Launches Improved Kinect for Windows SDK” »

Lately there has been a lot of unhappy developers expressing their feelings on Windows 8. Everyone from Gabe Newell, to some of the Blizzard executives and now the creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, have all come down pretty hard on the new Microsoft OS.
Microsoft requires a sort of certification process that Persson is not happy about. Notch said that he would rather “have Minecraft not run on [Windows 8] at all than to play along“ with Microsoft. He feels that this certification process is ruining the platform for indie developers.

The next Mustang you see in a showroom might own part of its design not to Chevy, but to Bill Gates. That futuristic take on the classic look will not only feature a 1967-era replica body on top of a 2012 chassis, but a hell of lot more kinds of bells and whistles to boot — only these will possibly be the same ones you get with Windows Vista and Xbox.
According to Geekologie, drivers will be able to choose from an array of different digital sounds for the horn, use a heads-up display Continue reading “Microsoft Gets into the Muscle Car Business With New Mustang” »

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play Super Mario Brothers with a Portal gun? The devs at Stabyourself have recreated the original Super Mario Brothers game except in this re-imagining of the classic NES title Mario is equipped with an 8-bit model Aperture Science Portal Gun. The gun’s mechanics obviously allow the player to approach the original title’s level design with a much more puzzle oriented mind set.
In August of last year rumours were floating around the internet about a Super Mario Brothers and Portal mashup. The folks at Stabyourself had a very ambitious project ahead of them but it’s now finally playable (via Wired). Its called “Mari0″ and its available free for PC’s on Windows, OS X and Linux.
Like we see in the Continue reading “Super Mario Gets A Portal Gun: “Mari0″ Crossover Available For Download” »

The online project-funding site Kickstarter has been in a lot of headlines as of late. First we told you about two Kickstarter projects that reached 1 million dollars in funding, and just today a 17-inch Windows tablet being built by a 12-year old. However, an interesting new take on game development (via The Verge) is definitely something that has our attention. Rather than just an online course, “Code Hero” aims to teach you how to build games through a first-person videogame.
Alex Peake and Primer Labs have come up with the innovative and intuitive way to learn how to code games and hope you’re interested in making their plans come to reality. Built on the Unity 3D Engine, Code Hero uses a series of missions and, for the most part, familiar mechanics to both teach the player about coding and allow them to build their own Untiy games while playing. With tablets quickly taking over the PC market, one 12 year old from California is thinking about the bigger picture, literally. While the average size of a tablet’s display typically ranges from 5- to 10-inches, tech fanatic James Hardman is taking the tablet game up a notch with a 17-inch Windows-powered tab he plans on manufacturing.
With a goal of $50,000 in funding, Hardman turned to Kickstarter to realize his dreams and posted his plans for the 17-inch super tablet. Oh, and according to him, the device is 5.1x as powerful as iPad 2.
James spoke to Mashable regarding his overarching motivation behind the project.
“I personally love bigger screens,” says the 12 year old Hardman, “And I know other people did, too. I looked everywhere and nobody had anything Continue reading “12-Year Old Building 17-inch Windows Tablet On Kickstarter” »

A new feature being developed by Microsoft is stirring up a bit of controversy, not necessarily for its ability to help you avoid dangerous parts of town, but mainly for its nickname — “Avoid Ghetto”.
According to NPR, the technology is actually part of Microsoft’s “Pedestrian Route Production” patent, which would allow a user to receive the safest route possible to any given desitination based on violent crime statistics.
The idea sounds harmless enough — to help citizens, specifically those travelling by foot, to avoid dangerous areas. However Continue reading “Microsoft Working On “Avoid Ghetto” Feature– Is It Racist?” »

Microsoft execs hit the stage last night for their pre-CES keynote address and CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Kinect will officially be coming to Windows PCs on February 1.
Ballmer mentioned they’ve partnered with 200 companies to develop Windows apps specifically for Kinect, but there were no details on how users might be able to control the operating system itself. Over on the Kinect for Windows Blog, the team announced that existing Kinect for Xbox 360 devices will not be compatible with Windows, requiring you to purchase a new unit for $249. Today at CES, 2012 OnLive made a couple of announcements (via SiliconFilter), one of which being a new iPad app capable of accessing a virtual Windows 7 desktop. The free app will essentially allow you to access Windows 7 stored on OnLive’s servers, giving you access to apps like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and other Windows-only apps that haven’t made their way to iOS yet.
The best part is the app will be available completely free with up to 2GB of storage. However, OnLive will also launch a Continue reading “OnLive Brings Cloud-Based Windows 7 To iPad with Access to Word, Excel” »

There seems to be a new malware threat popping up on our mobile platforms just about every other week; most typically affect a small portion of users that downloaded an app from an untrustworthy developer, but the finger often gets pointed at app approval guidelines in place by app stores like the Android Market.
Until all the recent controversy from CarrierIQ, there really hasn’t been a whole lot to worry about for end users in terms of malware, spyware, and viruses. That might not necessarily be true any longer, at least for users of Windows Phone devices. Continue reading “Windows Phone SMS Attack Bug Exposed” »

Seemingly out of nowhere, Microsoft decided to drop a universal Xbox LIVE iOS app on us today.
While it obviously isn’t the full-fledged Xbox Live experience that you might be hoping for, it does at first glance appear to be quite a slick looking companion app.
Available for free as of today, the “My Xbox LIVE” app will let you manage achievements, send messages to your friends, edit your LIVE profile, and edit your 3D Avatar. Continue reading “Microsoft Releases “My Xbox LIVE” App for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch” »

You’re probably well aware there are a more than a few knockoffs of Apple products floating around China. In fact, there are even entire fake Apple retail stores selling genuine Apple products.
That being said, at first glance this new MacBook Air knockoff known as the “AirBook” is perhaps the closest to the real thing we’ve seen. If you can get past the blatant rip-off of the MacBook Air’s design, it’s actually quite impressive…
Don’t expect an aluminum unibody from this $499 clone, as < em>MIC Gadget’s review of the device notes it’s actually just a “silver plastic unibody” painted with a matte finish to look like aluminum, inside and out. Continue reading “This MacBook Air Clone Takes Chinese Knockoffs To A New Level” »
