Author Genese Davis‘ first novel, The Holder’s Dominion, releases today, Friday March 1, and if her previous accomplishments are any indication, she is an author to keep an eye on.
Davis seems to find success in everything she does, be it dressage and show jumping (think horses), aircraft piloting, or playing Massively Multiplayer Online games.
As an adult, Davis discovered the gaming world and grew to appreciate the artistry that goes into it and the social bonds that grow out of it. She even created her own website, The Gamer in You, to broaden the oft-debated term ‘gamer’ (i.e. get people to stop being elitist jerks) and to awaken the gamer in everyone.
Despite her late start as a gamer, Davis now has extensive experience founding, running, and playing in competitive raiding guilds in Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft and once ranked in the top 100 players in the world for her class in WoW.
What does all of this have to do with a book? Well, The Holder’s Dominion is helping to break new ground as one of the first novels to deal with online gaming, joining the likes of Cory Doctorow’s For the Win. Dominion is even part of an emerging genre called ‘new adult,’ which focuses on characters who are in the early post-highschool portion of their lives, a time of great growth and change.

“I wanted to write for gamers and non-gamers alike about the unpredictable and influential ways that video games change us. I wanted to share with others the amazing experience of collaborative video games and the communities that grow up in and around them.”
The novel follows college sophomore Kaylie Ames as she discovers and becomes absorbed in a popular MMO called Edannair. Like Davis, Ames discovers a close and passionate community within the game. She then strives to protect both it and her fracturing family from the threat of the enigmatic Holder, a powerful player who is stirring up real-life mischief. Since the book is a ‘speculative thriller‘, expect to find a slight fantasy or science fiction element to crop up as well.
Dominion has received praise from some notable individuals, including Professor Richard Bartle, the game theorist responsible for the Bartle Test of player personality types; New York Times-bestselling author Christie Golden, writer of various Warcraft, StarCraft, and Star Trek novels; and New York Times-bestselling author and Lead Story Developer for Blizzard Entertainment, Micky Neilson.
We all know videogames still have a long way to go in terms of achieving widespread social recognition and respect, so it’s always good to see people like Davis trying to bridge the gap and create understanding.
If you’re looking for fiction about games that is told from an honest and informed perspective, free of poisonous stereotypes and misconceptions, pick up The Holder’s Dominion when it releases today. Get it digitally on day one or pre-order a physical copy now on Beaver’s Pond Books, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble. Check out Davis’ visit to 1337LoungeLive below.

After the ongoing headache/development hell the Warcraft movie was stuck in with Sam Raimi, Blizzard and Legendary Films have locked in major sci-fi ‘indie’ film director Duncan Jones (also known as David Bowie’s son) to helm the project. Great news? Sorta:
The Hollywood Reporter has insisted that this is an adaptation of the Warcraft franchise, not necessarily World of Warcraft, the Massively Multiplayer Online RPG that still has over 10 million subscribers. Continue reading “Warcraft Film Rises From the Ashes, Has Unexpected Choice for Director” »

Not only does Joyland, the unlicensed rumored Chinese World of Warcraft Theme Park, actually exist, a Redditor went to Changzou, China and has returned with a whole gallery worth of images for us. You can check out the images the user took in the gallery below.
Redditor FrancescaO_O documented her trip to the unlicensed park quite extensively as well as answering a few questions about the place. The theme park features a number of WoW looking themed statues and roller coasters among many other attractions.

Despite Gaming’s biggest time of the year being around the holidays, we don’t actually see a lot of Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other midwinter celebrations showing up in our video games as we sit down for a restful week of play. Given that Gaming’s already borrowed so much from other forms of entertainment, it’s a little surprising that we aren’t seeing the equivalent of traditional Christmas movies like “Miracle on 34th Street.
It makes sense. Since Christmas is the biggest sales point in the year, Developers need to focus more on getting big-budget titles out the door that can be played for the next few span of months, instead of Christmas-specific products that can only be played once a year. But despite that, Gaming’s still found time to pay tribute to the holidays in its own way—you just have to know where to look.
Below are the Top 6 Most Memorable Moments of Christmas in Gaming. Continue reading “The Top 6 Most Memorable Christmas Moments in Gaming” »

If you’ve never dated online, you might still occasionally wonder what it’s like. Fortunately, Online University has created an Infographic called “Gamers Get Girls (Or Guys),” which details that you’d probably have better romantic luck playing World of Warcraft. It helps if you’re good, but that’s not exactly a requirement.
Some of the tidbits are a little obvious, like how “there’s a lot more mystery when it comes to meeting during an online game session.”
Others are more entertaining, like how Engaging in mortal combat against hordes of orcs alongside a member of the opposite sex, for instance, is apparently far more romantic than the old dinner-and-a-movie thing. …turns out she won her hotly contested senate seat after all.
According to The New York Daily News, Colleen Lachowicz, who ran for Congress this year against Republican incumbent Tom Martin, will be one of the two senators from the state of Maine.
Many doubted whether Lachowicz could actually make it on her ticket, when earlier this year she was attacked for her WOW expertise, amongst other things.
Martin himself came under the public scrutiny of Continue reading “About That Level 68 WoW Player Who Ran For Senate…” »

Colleen Lachowicz, or Santiaga, as she’s known in the World of Warcraft universe, is a Level 85 orc warrior chick. For the WoW-unfamiliar, that’s the highest skill level a player can achieve. In the gaming world, this is obviously l33t status, perhaps even cause for hero worship — in a political race, not so much.
Turns out Lachowicz is running for Congress in Maine, and the Maine GOP is pointing to those WoW gaming habits as yet another reason she would make a crappy candidate. Continue reading “Maine GOP Attacks Democratic Candidate’s WoW Gaming Habit” »

Just in case you have 24gb free on your hard drive, you can now download Azeroth in full scale for minecraft.
The effort was created by minecraft forum member Rumsey using 68 BILLION blocks to voxelize (translate geometric objects into voxels or blocks) World Of Warcraft’s continents automatically. Originally the project BEGAN in February when the post was first created to “Craft Azeroth.”

Some time ago we reported to you regarding Blizzard putting retired World of Warcraft server blades up for sale with proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Today we learn that Blizzard has raised a total of $330,000 for St. Jude’s through what was a continual series of eBay auctions (via GT).
The goal was to bring the WOW community a chance to own a piece of the game’s history after the title had undergone a series of infrastructure updates.

For those of you who had somehow thought you’d miss the boat, and blizzard suddenly came out with a new sequel to WoW overnight (almost the exact opposite of how Blizzard operates in fact) don’t fret, the following is a spoof from none other than the folks over at “The Onion.”
And a pretty damn good one if you ask us…
The segment features the new WoW “sequel” that allows gamers to control another gamer playing World of Warcraft.

We’ve all been there — if not with WoW, then with CoD, or ME3, or any number of other MMORPGs that we must sacrifice the lures of daily reality for — if only for the good causes of saving Azeroth/Normandy/dying Planet Earth.
This man’s excuse seems as good as anyone’s: in this case, it’s the WoW world of Azeroth, whose eastern village just got hit with a blood-plague, and one our human hero must do everything in his power to stop.
So maybe the only real question is WHAT KIND OF SICK WIFE WOULD INTERFERE WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS (Not the orc wife, Genesta, as it turns out, but his other one)? Continue reading “WoW: Man Explains Love For His Wife…To His Wife” »

The below infographic compiles research from Jezebel, Ladies Journal, VentreBeat and CNN (amongst others) and needless to say there are some interesting findings:
Compare World of Warcraft’s 11 million users to eHarmony, the number one dating destination online, but only with 1 million users and clearly there is a large size disparity. Certainly not everyone, or even the majority, of those playing WoW are online looking for a significant other but the fact there are 10 million more people doesn’t hurt your chances (you’ll never know, you might meet your next Froglok to be). If the invention of the green-screen has led to anything (besides dozens of films trying to be Avatar) it’s been the ability to pay tribute to your favorite music videos. Besides a little chroma keying, it never hurts to have a sense of humor — and that last component is what makes this tribute video to Jace’s ‘I Play W.O.W’., courtesy of dubmasterist, is an obvious success.
The so called “dub master” the Dumbasterist:
…Makes tributes to songs I really enjoy listening to. If you want me to make a dub video for any song you have in mind, just let me know!

Addiction to video games is a difficult topic – almost as hot as violence in video game. Plenty of people claim that video game addiction is a modern epidemic, whereas scientists have yet to decide whether it is a valid diagnosis alltogether.
At the core of the discussion is – of course – World of Warcraft. I don’t think there is an individual who would openly admit to perhaps playing a bit too much WoW at times (or knows someone whose playing is a bit “excessive”).
Anthony Rosner aka Sevrin definitely thought he played way too much and made a drastic choice – to give up his virtual career and go Continue reading “‘In Real Life’ Interview: When A Grand Crusader Retires” »

We’ve seen some pretty incredible Minecraft creations in our time. We already showed you an epic stop motion Super Mario Land recreation, and also some impressive Steve Jobs tributes, just to name a few. However this is the first time we’ve seen a scale recreation of World of Warcraft’s Kalimdor continent, and soon to be the entire game…
The creator, MMO Champion forum member “Ramsesakama”, apparently used scripts and other custom software to “generate most of the content procedurally”. He started with Kalimdor, but plans to recreat the entire game using the exact same process. He explained in his forum post that he had to “compute the relative distances (in Minecraft blocks) between the different locations in Kalimdor”: Continue reading “WoW’s Kalimdor Gets Recreated To Scale In Minecraft” »

“You do anything long enough to escape the habit of living until the the escape becomes the habit.”
With those somewhat timeless words by comic book artist David Ryan, film student Anthony Rosner plunges us into the game that stole 7 years of his life. Yes — turns out that despite having 9000 achievement points, 16 dragons, tons of kills and pets, ad nauseum, a life of World of Warcraft and little else ended up having a bit of a detrimental effect.
